Our latest analysis shows that while fronting companies have rapidly grown—from $2.8B in premiums (2021) to nearly $8B (2024)—loss ratios consistently underperform the broader P&C industry across key commercial lines. Key takeaways: - Loss reserves heavily concentrated in recent years (2021–2024), with signs of adverse development already showing - Other Liability, Commercial Auto, and Workers' Comp segments show similar patterns: low initial loss picks, followed by sharp deterioration - If trends continue, this could challenge the sustainability of the fronting model—especially if reinsurers lose confidence - In a worst-case scenario, coverage disputes could emerge, echoing past fronting failures like the Reliance/Unicover scandal Writing premium is easy—writing profitable premium is not.
