Advancing the integration of psychosocial, behavioral & biomedical sciences
About us
The International Society of Behavioral Medicine (ISBM) is intended to serve the needs of all health‑related disciplines concerned with the integration of psychosocial behavioral and biomedical sciences. Our goals include: (1) To encourage formation of national or regional organizations of behavioral medicine, and to develop and maintain liaison with related professional organizations. (2) To encourage and co‑ordinate communication and interaction among various health professionals including biomedical and behavioral science researchers and clinicians, without regard to specific discipline loyalties. (3) To stimulate research, clinical, preventive and training activities through formal meetings, collaborative undertakings and awards for meritorious effort. (4) To develop guidelines for implementation of behavioral medicine training and research activities at various levels in the health sciences. (5) To serve as an information resource for behavioral medicine by facilitating access to scientific and professional journals computer‑based information systems, and organization of scientific meetings/conferences.

Interested in #PublicHealth and #HealthPromotion? Screening, brief interventions and referral to treatment (SBIRT)? Urgent and emergency care settings? #Workforce training? #Digital training? Join our free online Masterclass 10:00-11:00 on 29 Sept 2025, by the Institute of Health Promotion and Education (IHPE) and University of Nottingham, hosted by Prof Holly Blake FBPsS PFHEA, joined by Frank Coffey - Honorary Professor in Urgent and Emergency Care, Lucy Morris RN and Dr Emma Adams PhD FHEA MIHPE ➡️ In this session we will provide an overview of the unique role UEC settings can play in health promotion. ➡️ We will demonstrate the importance of embedding this in a whole-system,integrated approach to population health. ➡️ We will present findings from a national survey we undertook of healthcare workers’ attitudes towards promoting health in UEC settings and outline the barriers and enablers of health promotion practice as described by healthcare workers based in diverse UEC settings. ⭐ SBIRT is an ideal, though underused, approach in UEC settings for identifying patients with risk factors impacting on their health, providing immediate input during a ‘teachable moment’ and referring, where appropriate, to specialist services. ⭐ Alcohol misuse is a risk factor to health and wellbeing, very prevalent in UEC settings. ➡️ We developed and evaluated “Alcohol Prevention in Urgent and Emergency Care” (APUEC) online training for UEC healthcare workers. The aim was to increase positive attitudes, knowledge, confidence and skills related to SBIRT through the provision of (a) education on the impact of alcohol and the role of UEC staff in alcohol prevention, and (b) practical guidance on patient assessment, delivery of brief advice and referral decisions. We will discuss how this training was developed, how it was perceived by healthcare workers, and how skills learned can be applied in the clinical setting. 💡 We hope that such training may facilitate the integration of SBIRT into routine care, helping to reduce health inequalities, and contribute to population health improvement. Two weeks ago (already!), many dear colleagues and friends gathered in Vienna for the International Society of Behavioral Medicine conference. Some even arrived a bit early to join our expert workshop on the Digital Health Divide. The conference was a great experience for #HPGVienna - we networked with many existing and potentially new collaborators, successfully presented our work, and were able to show off the beautiful scenery at and surrounding Universität Wien (just a tiny bit of course!). We also got some inspiration for hosting Society for Ambulatory Assessment conference 2026 #SAA2026 next year. A big thanks to everyone who made our #DigitalHealthDivide2025 workshop a success - stay tuned for several manuscripts that are now in progress, and maybe even a special issue on the topic!
