The International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) is the only association solely dedicated to professionals involved in managing and directing security and safety programs in healthcare organizations. IAHSS members encompass law enforcement, public safety, security, safety and emergency management professionals dedicated to the protection of healthcare facilities worldwide. IAHSS also partners with government agencies and other organizations representing risk managers, emergency managers, engineers, architects, nurses, doctors and other healthcare stakeholders to further patient security and safety. I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) from International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS)! This certification means a lot to me. I have worked with two great leaders and mentors who both possess this certification that have pushed me and provided resources to me in Adrian Arriaga and Jerome McCants. Great colleagues such as William Nelson who have provided encouragement. To top it all off, it is Healthcare Security and Safety week.

Informative webinar by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) in conjunction with Healthcare Safety & Security Week. The topic of Workplace Violence covered by guests from the UK, Canada and the US sharing WPV management strategies. Some takeaways: 1. WPV Management is about emphasising prevention, not reaction after an incident. Trauma-informed care and getting into the root of escalation are critical in the reduction of WPV incidences. 2. Presence of WPV staff during or after incidents would greatly benefit staff confidence in regard to providing support to victims of WP. I attest to this, as I will always try my best to be present on site when requested. 3. WPV Prevention Units should be staffed by people with varied experiences related to WPV i.e. behavioural health, clinical, security as it provides a diverse perspective in formulating preventive and reactive strategies. Not necessary from law enforcement or security background. My SPU teammate was from behavioural health and I'm learning a lot from her everyday. 4. Its not just about our staff. Its also about our patients. The safety of both staff and patients are of paramount importance in order to create that safe space for both.
