  • The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is not over yet. Following the ceasefire, a rapid and unimpeded scale up of humanitarian aid is needed to treat the 55,000 children now suffering from acute malnutrition. Starving children need intensive medical care to recover, and the impact of acute malnutrition can often be long-term. Food alone cannot solve the problem. On #WorldFoodDay, we continue to call for a massive scale up of aid into Gaza – including food, medical supplies and access for humanitarian workers.

  • Somali mothers embody extraordinary strength. Despite facing extreme weather, conflict and displacement, they rise each day to provide for their children, walk long distances for healthcare, and always strive to improve life for their children. At the IRC, we meet mothers where they are. For some in Somalia, this means life-saving humanitarian aid: medical care, nutrition, clean water and shelter. For others, it means support to rebuild their futures, from starting small businesses to joining savings groups where women invest together. • A mother’s dreams in Gaza. Last week’s ceasefire news has brought a glimmer of hope to parents like Amani and their children. But with 90% of Gaza’s population displaced and 55,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition, this hope is fragile. It is critical that the peace agreement becomes a first step toward a permanent end to the war, so families like Amani’s can finally begin to rebuild.

  • Congratulations to Professor. Omar M. Yaghi on being awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry this week. 🧪 Born in Jordan to Palestinian refugee parents, Professor Yaghi was raised in Amman before moving to the US at the age of 15. He was awarded the prize along with Susumu Kitagawa and Richard Robson for the development of metal-organic frameworks (MFOs). These constructions between molecules have been used by researchers to harvest water from desert air, extract pollutants from water, capture carbon dioxide and store hydrogen. “I grew up in a very humble home, we were a dozen of us in one room, sharing it with the cattle that we used to raise. My father finished sixth grade and my mother couldn’t read or write. It’s quite a journey,” he said. “Smart people, talented people, skilled people exist everywhere. That’s why we really should focus on unleashing their potential through providing them with opportunity.” When we support refugees, everyone wins.

  • When you spend your days helping others through crisis, who helps you? Swipe for Saeeda's story 👉 In crisis zones worldwide, humanitarian workers face immense challenges daily. That's why we’re working in partnership with Pinterest on the Catalyzing Resilience in Emergencies (CaRE) Fund, to provide mental health and psychosocial support to the staff who dedicate their lives to helping others. From Islamabad to communities across Pakistan and beyond, we're building capacity, training staff in psychological first aid, and breaking down stigma around mental health in the workplace. Because when we support our humanitarian workers' well-being, we strengthen their ability to serve the communities that need them most. Illustrations by Shehzil Malik 💛 #WorldMentalHealthDay

  • The IRC and its partners stand ready to seize this moment and scale up the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza. After two years of conflict, we warmly welcome the first phase of a peace plan for Gaza which includes expanded humanitarian access into Gaza and the release of hostages. The IRC urges all parties to ensure that this agreement becomes a first step toward a permanent end to the war. Meanwhile with 55,000 Palestinian children suffering from acute malnutrition and 90% of the population displaced, what is needed now is a dramatic surge in the amount of aid going into Gaza. Food, fuel, water, and medical supplies must begin to flow in immediately.

  • After more than two years of Israeli bombardment, the situation on the ground in Gaza is absolutely devastating. 90% of the population is displaced. Nearly every single person in Gaza is in need of humanitarian assistance. Gaza also holds the appalling record of the highest number of child amputees per capita worldwide. This cannot be allowed to go on any longer. We’re calling for rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access so people can receive the protection, food, and care they urgently need. Above all, children must be shielded from further harm, and aid operations must be allowed to continue without obstruction. An immediate ceasefire is needed to ensure the protection of Palestinians and the release of the remaining hostages.

  • “I can’t show my fear. I keep it together for the sake of my children", says Amani Aziz in Gaza. Families like Amani’s have been displaced again and again, losing their homes and their everyday life. Every day is a struggle to secure basic necessities: food, water, and safety for their children. Our teams, with support from @eu_echo, work tirelessly to create safe spaces for displaced families in Gaza, where children like Amani’s are given the chance to feel joy and hope together with others.

  • What does six hours of your day look like? For 13-year-old Nusaiba in Sudan, it looked like walking for water while her education waited. Here’s the thing we don’t talk about enough: bodily autonomy starts with having your basic needs met. When girls like Nusaiba spend their entire day just getting water, they can’t make choices about their education, their future, their lives. Sudan is facing the world’s largest humanitarian crisis right now, and behind every statistic is a girl whose autonomy got stripped away by circumstances she never chose.   But here’s what’s possible when the right support shows up: the IRC, with support from European Commission, is bringing clean water, healthcare, and nutrition directly to families like Nusaiba’s. Swipe to learn more >
