About us

The Institute of Navigation (ION) is the world’s premier non-profit professional society advancing the art and science of positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT). The ION sponsors an International Technical Meeting Co-Located with the Precise Time and Time interval Systems Applications Meeting (PTTI) (January), IEEE/ION PLANS (Spring - Even Years), ION Pacific PNT (Spring - Odd Years), ION Military Division's Joint Navigation Conference (JNC) (Summer), and ION GNSS+ Meeting (September). These conferences provide a chance to present technical papers and discuss new findings with industry peers. The ION is well known for is its prestigious peer-reviewed and indexed quarterly journal, NAVIGATION. The journal publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on all areas related to the science and technology of air, sea, land and space navigation, including estimation of position, velocity, attitude, and time, and the technologies that support the determination of these quantities. Supporting technologies include navigation aids and instrumentation, algorithms and methods, error and integrity analysis, signal processing, biological navigation systems, surveying and geodesy. Editorial services for the journal are provided by professionals in government, industry, and academia.

🛰️ October 23 isn’t just another day. Every October 23 (10.23), we celebrate something far deeper, the invisible rhythm that keeps our world in sync. 🌍 This number enables: 📶 Telecom networks and 5G synchronization 🏦 High-frequency financial trading timestamps ⚡ Grid stability and power-system timing 🛡️ Defence mission operations 🚁 Autonomous drones, precision agriculture & aviation safety 🚀 Celebrating International GNSS Day (Courtsey: The Institute of Navigation), 10.23 MHz, the frequency that changed the world. 🛰️ Every now and then, we hear about the L-band used in Navigation, specifically L1, L2, and L5: • L1 = 1575.42 MHz • L2 = 1227.60 MHz • L5 = 1176.45 MHz Now, have you notice something common in these numbers? 🤔 Divide them by today’s date 10.23: • L1 = 1575.42 / 10.23 = 154 • L2 = 1227.60 / 10.23 = 120 • L5 = 1176.45 / 10.23 = 115 ✨ Isn’t that fascinating! Not just this, the PRN code length, the chipping rate all are governed by this number. 🧭 The entire architecture of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS): #NavIC, #GPS, #Galileo, #GLONASS, #BeiDou, and #QZSS traces back to one fundamental frequency: 10.23 MHz. Chosen by the GPS design team in the 1970s, this wasn’t random, it’s the master clock frequency from which every pseudorange code, carrier phase, and precise timing pulse is derived. 💡 Why exactly 10.23? (This deserves a separate post, a 50-year-old engineering choice/constraint that still drives the entire world’s timing.) It’s one of humanity’s quietest yet most transformative number. As we celebrate #InternationalGNSSDay, it’s a reminder to our GNSS & PNT community of a shared mission: 🚀 To make navigation and timing more accurate, reliable, and resilient for billions who depend on it, often without realizing it. 🌐So today, on 10/23, let’s appreciate the #engineers, #physicists, and #space_technologists who made “location & timing” a universal utility. At VyomIC, we understand how critical every decision can be, it has the power to shape the next 50–100 years. So why not be a little more sophisticated? #InternationalGNSSDay #GNSS #PNT #NavIC #GPS #Timing #Innovation #LEOPNT #VyomIC Vibhor Jain Anurag Patil #PNT means VyomIC.

When was the last time you pulled out your phone to get directions? 📱 Looked for a restaurant near you? 🍝 Flew on an airplane? 🛫 All of these things are made possible in part by global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Although GNSS plays a significant role in our daily lives, we often take it for granted. 🛰️ Every year, on 23 October, the world celebrates International GNSS Day. The date 10.23 (in American format) was chosen to mirror the foundational GPS frequency of 10.23 MHz. This year, the focus turns to Europe as we celebrate 30 years of European satellite navigation. Over the last decades, Europe has has become a leader in satellite navigation, with Galileo, the world’s most accurate civilian satellite navigation system, and EGNOS, which enables safe landings at airports across Europe. 📷 To celebrate three decades of European innovation, collaboration and excellence in satellite navigation and honour International GNSS Day, we set up a photo expo highlighting important moments in the history of European satellite navigation at ESA’s technical heart in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. This expo will allow staff and visitors to stroll through the history of satellite navigation and be reminded of how far we have come in such a short time. 🥳 How will you celebrate International GNSS Day this year? 🌍Happy International GNSS Day!🚀 Ever wondered why International GNSS Day falls on 10.23? 🛰️10.23 MHz is the original GPS frequency, the heartbeat of every GNSS signal orbiting our planet. 🎉This year we are also celebrating 30 Years of Europe's Galileo navigation system, marking its evolution from a European Union initiative in 1995, to one of the world's most advanced GNSS systems. 📷Chris Smith, Elijah Owens and Katie from the LabSat GPS/GNSS Simulator team were at the recent ION GNSS+ 2025 event, where the The Institute of Navigation were promoting the signals that connect us all. Here’s to the people pushing GNSS technology forward. #GNSSDay #LabSat #RACELOGIC #IONGNSS #drivenminds #gamechangers

🌍✨ Happy International GNSS Day! ✨🌍 📅 October 23rd | #GNSSDay 🛰️ The International GNSS Day, celebrated annually on October 23, recognizes the crucial role played by global navigation satellite systems (GNSS).  This date was chosen because it refers to the fundamental frequency of 10.23 MHz, which is essential for all #GPS and #GNSS technologies. Launched by the The Institute of Navigation, this day serves to celebrate the technological achievements and far reaching influence of GNSS on modern areas of life such as telecommunications, finance, and emergency services. 🎂 This year marks the 30th anniversary of the European #Galileo program. It's a special day at Fraunhofer IIS, especially for the Satellite Based Positioning Systems (SLS) department of Alexander Rügamer, which we are celebrating with galactic cupcakes, space cookies, and lots of talks about GNSS. 💪 Whether in the laboratory, on the roof or in field trials, our team is conducting research on GNSS #receivers and #antennas – for precise, reliable and independent navigation "made in Europe".

Happy International GNSS Day and greetings from our HQ in Toulouse with our team & partners! 🛰️ Initiated by The Institute of Navigation, International GNSS Day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the technologies, innovations, and people shaping Global Navigation Satellite Systems. This year’s edition was particularly special, marking the 30th anniversary of Galileo, the European Union’s own GNSS constellation. 🌍 Developed by the European Union through the European Space Agency - ESA, Galileo provides highly accurate positioning and timing services that strengthen the EU’s autonomy and innovation in navigation. To honor this milestone, we organized a friendly event at our offices with our employees and partners, including a Galileo-themed quiz to learn more about this remarkable program while sharing a great moment together. A big thank you to the ION for launching this inspiring initiative, and to everyone who joined us in celebrating the power and future of GNSS! 💫
