𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐮𝐩, 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. “I was only 15 when I had my first child.” By 23, I was already a mother of five. Today, I’m raising 11 children—the youngest is just five years old. “I spent so many days in and out of the hospital. Postpartum complications were constant. I had no income, and even buying soap or washing powder was impossible. The smell of unwashed bedding made our home uncomfortable. It affected everything—even my relationship with my husband.” 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬. 𝐍𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐈’𝐦 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝. That’s why I joined the Nyarongi Paralegal’s community action group. I now speak to teenagers and young women about preventing unplanned pregnancies. I tell them, ‘You have the right to make decisions about your body. You have the right to dream. 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, I’m sharing my story to remind us all: lived experience is powerful. Let’s support community advocates. Let’s expand access to contraceptive information and services. Postabortion contraception is essential for preventing unintended pregnancies, especially in low-resource areas where access to reproductive health services is limited or inconsistent. In these settings, community pharmacies often serve as the most accessible point of care, particularly for people who can’t reach hospitals or clinics. This makes them a critical part of bringing essential care to people in their own neighborhoods, where traditional health systems don’t always reach. A new study in Kenya found that women who received contraception at the same time as abortion pills—using a “bundled” approach where both services were offered together—were 49% more likely to continue use of contraception afterwards. In contrast, those merely exposed to generic contraceptive promotion at the time of abortion were significantly less likely to adopt a method on their own. The study also found that postabortion contraceptive use is strongly shaped by women’s age, education, prior contraceptive experience, and the support of their partners and peers in the decision to choose abortion. For over 50 years, we’ve resisted and persisted, working hard alongside our partners to achieve historic law and policy changes that have expanded reproductive rights and abortion access for millions around the world—from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia to Nepal, Pakistan, Mexico and Bolivia.  Change doesn’t happen overnight—and often not without major setbacks and opposition. But we keep going, knowing that our proven strategies, incredible partners and deep commitment to reproductive justice will prevail.
