Today's #PedestrianSafetyMonth project focuses on the City of Ann Arbor, MI. The City of Ann Arbor is a #VisionZero community are committed to achieving zero deaths and serious injuries across the #transportation system. This is further demonstrated by the city creating a map of its High Injury Network of corridors and intersections. In 2025 the city worked with the Michigan Department of Transportation to add four mid-block #crosswalks with RRFBs and APS. There were also two #pedestrian refuges installed. This corridor is considered a Tier 1 #safety corridor. These crosswalks represent efforts to increase pedestrian safety along this corridor and to address pedestrian crashes. Additionally, in 2023, the City installed a series of quick build projects that sought to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians, reduce their exposure across numerous locations, and provide more visible pavement markings for drivers. The locations selected were also on the City’s HIN. #ITEYoungMemberMonday highlights Corinne Arriaga, AICP, CPH, a Senior Transportation Planner for the City of Sarasota in Florida. With more than eight years in the public sector, Corinne is passionate about the intersection of health and transportation and brings great energy and insight to every project she touches. Her work focuses on traffic calming, complex transportation project management, data-driven multimodal planning and policy, public engagement, and securing funding. Corinne joined ITE in December 2022 after encouragement from her employer, and quickly found a home in the Transportation and Health Committee, where she dove into meaningful work from her first meeting. That action-oriented spirit has carried her far—both professionally and within ITE. She is proud to have led community-driven efforts such as the MPO’s 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan, the Transit Signal Priority Study, and a Complete Streets project that helped secure a $12M federal BUILD grant. Corinne also played a key role in developing the Street Design chapter of the City's Engineering Design Criteria Manual, shaping healthier, safer, and more equitable infrastructure. Her contributions to ITE include co-authoring the Quick Bite on health and MPOs and her ongoing leadership in the Transportation and Health Committee. In 2025, she was named one of ITE’s Young Leaders to Follow — check out the full list here: https://lnkd.in/d9Z24DW Corinne defines success not by perfection, but by progress and learning: “Did we leave something better than we found it? If yes, that’s success. If not, what can we take from this and do better next time?” To her, transportation is about people. “I love working with the community, solving problems, and taking action to ensure healthy, safe, accessible mobility.” Corinne values lifelong learning. One highlight from the past year was learning about the National Accessibility Evaluation and how communities like Cook County, Illinois are using that data to improve multimodal planning. Her advice to aspiring transportation professionals: “Keep an open mind. Transportation is fundamentally about people. Get to know the community you’re serving and work together to find solutions and opportunities.” And to those just starting out in ITE: “Get involved! Join a committee or council. You’ll expand your network, contribute to meaningful work, and discover where you can thrive.” Click the link below to read more about Corrine and her accomplishments: https://lnkd.in/eNfPxYpP Interested in being featured in a future #ITEYoungMemberMonday? Thank you Satish Ukkusuri for the detailed presentation about Leveraging AI for Transit Planning: From Data Scarcity to Actionable Insights. Traditional transit planning methods (household surveys, manual counts, and ridership records) are increasingly insufficient for understanding complex mobility patterns, particularly in data-scarce environments. This presentation demonstrates how artificial intelligence and passive big data sources can transform transit planning practice, offering unprecedented insights into travel behavior, system performance, and resilience. Drawing from applied work across cities from four continents, including Indianapolis, Delhi, Chennai, Mexico City, and West African capitals, we present a comprehensive AI analytics toolkit using mobile phone location data. The methodology enables extraction of multimodal origin-destination matrices, transit stop utilization patterns, and route-level demand forecasting at granular spatial and temporal scales. We conclude by examining implementation challenges: algorithmic interpretability, data bias mitigation, and the critical gap between analytical capability and policy integration. As agencies confront demands for greater sustainability, these AI-driven tools offer transformative potential when thoughtfully deployed.
