#ITEYoungMemberMonday highlights Vivian Sy, PE, a Traffic and ITS Engineer at Arcadis, where she works on design-build projects using MicroStation and Florida Department of Transportation standards to design ITS plans. With more than six years in the transportation industry, she continues to seek growth, new challenges, and opportunities to make an impact. She also serves as co-chair of the ITE International Younger Member Committee Meet a Young Member series and Young Member Chair of the ITE Florida Puerto Rico District (FLPRITE). An active ITE member since her college days at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona, she began as a transfer student representative and later served as Student Chapter President for 2018–2019. After graduation, she took a brief break before rejoining in 2022 upon moving to Florida, where she sought a new professional and social network. What began as joining a great group of people evolved into a transformative experience that shaped her understanding of the industry and the importance of connections. Among her favorite ITE memories are those that pushed her outside her comfort zone—from volunteering at registration during the FLPRITE Annual Meeting to introducing herself to new members and taking on leadership roles. Most notably, she helped plan and host the ITE Annual Meeting MiteY Race in Orlando. Having participated in past races, she recalled how fun and engaging they were, making it especially rewarding to help organize one and hear participants’ positive feedback. She appreciates the ever-changing and complex nature of transportation. Tackling challenging projects provides constant learning opportunities and exposure to new technologies that keep her motivated and inspired. Success, to her, is about more than professional milestones—it’s about enjoying the journey and maintaining balance. She believes in making time for joy, whether through travel, hobbies, or meaningful moments with family and friends. True success, in her view, should feel fulfilling, not just look impressive on paper. Her advice to aspiring transportation professionals: approach the field with curiosity and an open mind. Transportation is more than roads and bridges—it’s about solving real-world problems, improving communities, and helping people move safely and efficiently. Continuous learning, adaptability, and mentorship are key. And above all, she encourages others to find joy in both the work and the relationships built along the way. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) promise safer streets and greater mobility—but the road to full automation comes with significant risks. In ITE’s latest technical brief, Potential Secondary Effects of Increasing Automation, authors Dan Hennessey, P.E., T.E., PTOE, PTP, RSP1, Mallory Scates, PE, PTP, and Jimmy Jessup examine how Level 5 AVs could reshape land use, impact transit, worsen congestion, and introduce complex equity and cybersecurity challenges. This webinar, being held on November 20, will explore how AVs may alter the built environment and transport systems—potentially intensifying sprawl, undermining public transit, and shifting liability from drivers to manufacturers. The takeaway is clear: the future of AVs is not just technological, but deeply social, political, and spatial. The webinar also includes Jen Duthie, Head of Innovation with Cintra, a Ferrovial company, to discuss how her firm is working through this space with manufacturers, operators, and government entities. With proactive planning and impartial and focused policy, transportation professionals can guide automation toward more sustainable outcomes. The ITE Traffic Engineering Council has been studying various travel trends that occurred during the COVID Pandemic. During the initial research, it was apparent that some of the factors had significant regional and local variations where application of national trend data does not fit actual conditions. On November 6, the Traffic Engineering Council will host a webinar aims to present and discuss some of the more significant regional and local variations. It also will highlight implications to ITE and our industry. A very productive day attending the Chesapeake and Potomac Section of ITE (CAPSITE) Annual Conference and Business Meeting. Thankful to the Section for their support towards my upcoming ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals Leadership Program. Meeting colleagues from the start of my career in Maryland, friends in the industry and many others in the transportation community was a personal refresher.
