Today we spent time with Ben Walker, a Holocaust survivor who shared his story with JF&CS staff and community members. Ben talked about what it was like to be a 7-year-old during the Holocaust, and about a life that carried him from Romania, to Israel, and eventually to the U.S. It was heavy. It was moving. And somehow, it was also full of humor and humanity. Be honest… do you know what happens to young adults with developmental disabilities after high school? Most people don't know. I didn't either. Over the past few weeks, I’ve visited our six group homes and day program, meeting the 24 people who live there and the 45 who come each day. They’re warm, funny, and full of life. They want what we all want...independence, community, and purpose. But here’s the truth: more than 7,000 Georgians with disabilities are stuck on a waiting list for the Medicaid waiver that funds personal care, job coaching, transportation, and housing support. They’ve already been approved. They’re just waiting for the state to fund their slot. Some wait a few years. Others wait a decade. Meanwhile, Georgia is sitting on a multi-billion-dollar surplus. That’s not a money problem. It’s a values problem. The CDC estimates that about 17% of Georgia’s kids have a developmental disability, roughly 210,000 children. Many will grow up to find that the supports they were promised don’t exist. Families are stretched thin. Caregivers are underpaid. And we all look the other way, until it’s our son or granddaughter. Known for his approachable, personable nature and thoughtful leadership, Rabbi Bram will provide pastoral care, lead support groups, and walk alongside those navigating life’s difficult moments.
