#Bishkek has strengthened its ability to plan, finance, and implement sustainable urban development thanks to United Nations Joint SDG Fund–supported programme “Empowering Bishkek Stakeholders for Sustainable Development: Awareness and Capacity Building for #SDG Action.” Implemented by UNECE UNDP, and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) under the coordination of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, the initiative built on the city’s 2023 Voluntary Local Review (VLR) to create practical policy and financing tools that help the municipality integrate the SDGs into everyday decision-making and development planning. Within the joint programme, UNDP played an important role in building municipal capacities for transparent and effective financial management. Under UNDP’s technical leadership, learning and capacity-building sessions were organized for city hall employees and municipal departments on budget transparency and programme-based budgeting, introducing principles of openness and accountability in public financial management. Based on international practices and national budget legislation, UNDP developed a methodology for Bishkek’s first “Citizen’s Budget” — a clear and accessible presentation of city revenues, expenditures, and funding priorities for residents and local stakeholders. The programme also included a comprehensive analysis of the city’s 2023–2024 budget performance and targets for 2025, identifying key trends and resource gaps. In partnership with the municipality, UNDP is finalizing an assessment of Bishkek’s medium-term financial needs, taking into account the administrative-territorial reform. The findings will serve as a foundation for sound investment prioritization and strengthened financial sustainability of the city. Through these efforts, UNDP and partners are helping Bishkek build the institutional capacity, transparency, and financial tools needed to localize the SDGs and ensure sustainable urban growth. #urbandevelopment #SDGintegration Elmira Ibraeva Kanykei Ergesheva Azamat Usubaliev

🇹🇯 Tajikistan is taking action to build healthier food systems and prevent noncommunicable diseases (#NCDs). In Dushanbe, policymakers, experts, and partners gathered for a two-day Policy Dialogue on Preventing NCDs through Food Systems and Multisectoral Action, co-organized by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the World Health Organization. Held under the Joint SDG Fund–financed programme “Transforming Food Systems for Better Nutrition”, implemented by FAO, UNICEF, World Health Organization, and World Food Programme, the dialogue united ministries of health, agriculture, finance, and education to strengthen national policies that promote healthier diets and reduce preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. By linking health and food systems, Tajikistan is advancing coordinated, evidence-based action, from reducing salt and trans fats to improving school meals, to make healthy living a reality for all. 🌱

Farmers transforming waste into watts! ⚡ Turning what once went up in smoke into clean energy, new income, and a more sustainable future, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, 🇿🇦 South Africa’s sugarcane belt. This local initiative shows what a just energy transition really looks like. It grows from the ground up, linking climate goals with real livelihoods, with support from the Joint SDG Fund programme in #SouthAfrica. As the world prepares for the #G20 Johannesburg Summit, the first ever G20 on African soil, stories like this remind us that global transformation starts locally. When waste becomes energy and sugarcane becomes a symbol of innovation, we see how systems can change together for people, for the planet, and for the future we share. 🌱 A heartfelt thanks from the United Nations Joint SDG Fund to Office of the UN Resident Coordinator Nelson Muffuh and the United Nations South Africa team for leading such inspiring and catalytic work.
