Queer and trans survivors of IPV often face additional barriers to safety, above and beyond the difficulties all survivors face, whether it’s from the specific, identity-based tactics their abuser uses, from an unsupportive or estranged family, or a history of cold, even contemptuous, responses from those who represent the system. Even the most well-intentioned first responders and advocates can struggle to adequately serve this population without an awareness of these barriers and their history.
