  • Honoring Our History. Creating Our Future. At KzFV, we believe in investing in spaces that tell a story, and now, we're adding a new chapter. We're incredibly proud to announce the acquisition of 302-308 W. Michigan Ave; a historic property that has been a cornerstone of Kalamazoo since 1850. This building has seen it all: from a shoe store in the 1800s to a grocer, a piano shop, a cigar distributor, and most recently, the home of the legendary Michigan News, a true sanctuary and beacon in our city. Thanks to the vision of longtime owner Dean Hauck and the resilience of this incredible building, KzFV now owns two of four Black-owned properties in downtown Kalamazoo. This is more than a transaction; it's a commitment to economic empowerment and preserving the rich tapestry of our community. We are honored to carry this history forward. What future will we build together? • One year down. Like the startups we fund, we’ve spent our first year in full-on build mode. We’ve been laying the groundwork, building our team, and constructing the systems that will support our mission for years to come. This year, we hired our first staff members, built our application pipeline from the ground up, and began cultivating countless relationships; the seeds (many of which) that won’t come to fruition for a long time. We are constantly evaluating, reimagining, and refining our work. We're proud of the foundation we’ve built, and we know this is just the beginning. The party is just getting started! For now, thank you for all the ways you've supported us; be that spreading the word, liking a post, trusting us enough to apply for funding, signing up for our newsletter, or attending an event. It all makes a difference and it is truly appreciated. #Kalamazoo #VC #Startups #Entrepreneurship #Michigan #BuildingFromScratch #MidwestInnovation #BlackInvestors

  • What would you love to see in Downtown Kalamazoo? We’re not just acquiring properties; we are making history! As far as we know, Downtown Kalamazoo has never had more than three Black-owned properties at any one time. Today, we’re humbled to share that KzFV now owns two. 🏢 131 W Kalamazoo is the latest addition to our real estate portfolio. This commercial space has lived many lives: restaurant, retail store, manufacturing site, even an auto repair shop. Now, it becomes something more; a symbol. A commitment to reimagine what’s possible. A space for potential to take root. We don’t know exactly what it will become, but we know the energy is right; and the future is bold. 📸 Check out the photos and infographic below. 👇 And tell us; what would you love to see come alive here? #KalamazooForward #DowntownKalamazoo #BlackOwnedRealEstate #InclusiveDevelopment #CommunityCapital #MichiganRealEstate #UrbanReinvestment #MidwestMomentum #PlaceBasedInvesting #FounderFocused #RealEstateImpact #BuildTheFuture #KzFV

“The future is already here. The question is: who will claim it, shape it, and make it belong to us?” This year Detroit Digital Empowerment Summit was one small step for Black Tech Saturdays. One giant leap for this community. 🚀 This weekend, we moved mountains together. $175,000 in non-dilutive capital went directly into the hands of six new dreamers, six different companies, six new lights ready to shine. ✨ From 90+ applicants in our Mass Tech Adoption Challenge, 14 rose to the final stage, and 3 secured $25,000 each to bring their tech adoption ideas to life—ideas that will make technology more accessible and useful for everyday people. With the support of Milestone Growth Capital Institute and Dawn Batts, our finalists pitched with power. With the wisdom of judges Robert Brooks, Larry Brinker, Jr., Marvin L. Logan Jr, Amanda Lewan, and Jeremiah Steen, we identified three solutions poised to scale. ✨ Then came the Big Bet. Out of 160+ submissions, 30 advanced to semifinals, had support and coaching from Monica Wheat, 10 made it to the final stage. The judges had no easy task, but from that crucible came three champions: $50K, $30K, and $20K to propel founders toward their next milestone. Massive thanks to our judges Maria Thompson, Shalanda Armstrong, David C. Bloom, Cory Tincher, Marcel Price, Linda Nosegbe, Alison Todak, Bilal Hammoud, Mykolas Rambus, and Morice Norris. This wasn’t just about capital. It’s about additional BTS support—helping these founders gain users, customers, visibility, and the insights they need to succeed. It’s about proving that when talent is everywhere but opportunity is not, we can close the gap together. And now, it’s about you. We need you to meet these founders. Learn their names. Use their products. Share their stories. Become their customers and their champions. Because in the next great tech hub, when one of us wins, we all win. This is just the beginning. #BlackTechSaturdays #DetroitDigitalEmpowermentSummit #OwnTheDream #Money #closethegap #BridgeTheDivide #TheFutureisBright #TheFutureIsUs Thank you Rocket Community Fund Rocket Classic Gilbert Family Foundation Michigan Economic Development Corporation for making this possible 🚀🚀🚀

What an Incredible Summit! Friday’s Summit was inspiring. From the first welcome to the last conversation, the energy, ideas, and connections were unforgettable. Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared, and supported. Opening Inspiration Abby Gates (Sproutwise) spotlighted how uneven early-stage capital and resources slow founders—and how she’s fixing it by gathering data and building relationships through "Silobusters", so Michigan’s startup network functions as one connected ecosystem. Industry Insights Kevin A. Damoa (Founder & CEO, Glid) drew on 23 years of dual-service logistics and his SpaceX milestone as the first to ship, launch, and recover a commercial rocket. He showed how Glid pairs software + hardware to modernize road-to-rail logistics—cleaner, faster, and more cost-effective for supply chains and regional economies. Community Growth Amanda Lewan (Bamboo) shared the excitement for Bamboo’s Grand Rapids Grand Opening and how intentional spaces spark collaboration so founders, investors, and ideas thrive together. Funders Panel Kai Dumont (Rende Progress Capital), Daniel Jefferies (Kalamazoo Forward Ventures), and Milinda Ysasi (Grow) emphasized that relationships and solid documentation unlock capital, and that inclusive investment plus local resources turn ideas into scalable ventures. Founders Panel Lia Moore (Coolavo) Amazed with brand-customizable cooling pillows redefining travel comfort. Kevin A. Damoa (Glid) Wowed with breakthrough road-to-rail tech. Rachel Berkal (Vetr Health) Captivated with a vision proving pet care can grow big while staying personal. Terra Osman (Farmish) Showed how fresh thinking can rebuild local food connections and strengthen communities from the ground up. Stacy Spikes (MoviePass) delivered a masterclass in reinvention—from Motown to MoviePass to Mogul. Their candor about failures, pivots, and wins kept the room locked in. The Power of Being an Outsider Rishi Moudgil (Michigan Founders Fund) closed with Stacy Spikes on breaking barriers as outsiders. Stacy traced a path from Motown intern and work on Boomerang/Bad Boys, to senior roles at Miramax/Sony/October Films, to founding UrbanWorld, now the largest festival for Women & BIPOC storytellers. He capped it with Mogul by MoviePass—a fantasy box-office game (think DraftKings for movies) with a 400k+ waitlist—born from weekend box-office debates and built to deepen engagement with film lovers. Gratitude All Around To every speaker, panelist, founder, funder, volunteer, and attendee—thank you. Southwest Michigan is rising as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, and Friday’s conversations are already shaping what’s next. Special thanks to our sponsors—Kabundant, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Kalamazoo Forward Ventures, Monroe-Brown Foundation, and the City of Kalamazoo—for believing in this vision and making the Summit possible.

  • That’s a wrap on our first Reach Forward Conversation Series! This isn't your average networking event. We're creating a space for purpose-driven connections, where ambition meets opportunity and million-dollar deals are made right here in Kalamazoo. Here’s a look at what the series is all about: - A Strategic Focus: Each event is centered around a specific, high-growth industry, from construction to food service. We're doing three of these a year, building a powerful pipeline for our community. - Hand-Selected Entrepreneurs: We bring together 10 of our area's most scalable and dynamic businesses, connecting them with key players in their industry. - Powerful Partnerships: We invite leaders from multi-billion dollar corporations looking to diversify their supply chains and discover new investment opportunities. This is how our entrepreneurs get the tools they need to scale. - Community First: We celebrate with incredible local food and dope creative talent, proving you can plant roots in Kalamazoo and scale right from here. We believe in building bridges, not just businesses. A huge thank you to our collaborators Southwest Michigan First, ROOM 35, and El Concilio for helping make this event happen. And love to the venue, The Black Arts and Cultural Center of Kalamazoo. 📸 Photo Credit: Chance Brown #ReachForward #Kalamazoo #KzFV #MidwestInnovation #MainStreet #Entrepreneurship #Networking #CommunityBuilding #VentureCapital #RealEstate

  • We’re proud to announce that Marcel Price, our Director of Community & Strategic Engagement at Kalamazoo Forward Ventures, will be serving as a judge at this year’s Black Tech Saturdays 2025 Digital Empowerment Summit! 📍 Join us THIS Friday and Saturday (September 26-27) at The Tubman Center (480 W Baltimore St, Detroit, MI) for two days of innovation, connection, and celebration of vibrant brilliance in tech. Marcel is no stranger to bold moves. As a former philanthropic founder, he helped take a grassroots organization from articles of incorporation to becoming a multi-million dollar nonprofit; raising millions through public/private partnerships and state appropriations along the way. We also want to give a major shout-out to Black Tech Saturdays for the game-changing grant just awarded by the Knight Foundation! A win for them is a win for all of us. Because showing WE can is one of the many reasons WE exist. Let’s build. Let’s empower. Let’s celebrate the future of entrepreneurship in Michigan.
