💥 Capita fined £14 million over 2023 cyberattack The ICO has fined outsourcing giant Capita £14 million after a 2023 breach exposed the personal data of 6.6 million people, including pension holders, employees and customers. The ICO ruled the attack could have been prevented had Capita maintained adequate security controls. The breach, triggered by a malicious file download, went undetected for nearly 58 hours, allowing hackers to steal almost a terabyte of sensitive data before deploying ransomware. Capita says it “regrets the incident” and has since strengthened its cybersecurity posture, but the ICO found it had previously ignored warnings about vulnerabilities and lacked sufficient monitoring.
