Last week we got the chance to showcase our smoothies in the glorious surroundings of London’s Fortnum & Mason, surely the world’s most elegant supermarket. We were at the closing reception for the Big Food Redesign Challenge, an ambitious 18-month project led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and aimed at inspiring the food sector to design products that help nature thrive. The Challenge offered retailers and producers like kencko the opportunity to pioneer a food system in which nature and business can work together. By participating, we learned a great deal about how to maximize the positive impact of our products. We explored ways to source raw ingredients with nature in mind, and analyzed detailed impact metrics for all the ingredients we use. We’re so grateful that kencko was one of just 57 producers selected for the showcase from hundreds of applicants, and honored to be featured alongside brands who are taking bold steps to help build a new food system - one that’s focused on helping people, nature, and the climate thrive. Warm congratulations to all our fellow challenge participants. It was great to meet like-minded brands, nerd out on upcycled ingredients and sustainable packaging, and share some of the daily heartbreaks and triumphs of trying to change the food system for the better. It's been a year since the entire kencko team received news of what seemed like an existential setback for the company: a massive fire had completely destroyed our production facilities and nearly all of our inventory and equipment. It was a moment of devastation and doubt, to be sure, but our CEO and founder Tomás Froes sprung into action before the flames had even been put out, and the team followed suit. We quickly learned that despite a temporary but complete inability to manufacture products, we had everything we needed to right the ship: our people, our mission, and a steadfast belief in both. The past year has been incredibly challenging, but also clarifying and beyond fulfilling, and we can't wait to see what 2025 has in store.
