  • KIPP Capital Region honors the 100 years of Black History commemorations - a movement cultivated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson from the Association for the Study Of African American Life and History (ASALH), to ensure that Black experiences, brilliance and contributions for those who fought for freedom were never erased or overlooked. Black educators carried this work from their classrooms into the communities building traditions of celebration and truth-telling that still continue today. Black History shapes who we are, how we lead and how we imagine what's possible. At KIPP Capital Region we teach our scholars with honesty, pride and purpose the important role that African Americans have played in shaping our country and world. When our scholars know their history they learn how powerful their future can be. Last year we gathered as a community for our Black History Month Celebration and asked our scholars What does Black History mean to you? Enjoy this video and hear their voices.

  • KIPP Capital Region celebrates and honors the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to shaping American history. We recognize his leadership, dedication, and his call to end injustices. The March on Washington was a historic day where over 250,000 people participated in pressuring congress for a change, calling to end segregation, employment and voting rights discrimination. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his infamous "I have a Dream'' speech - creating a vision for racial equality in America, calling for an end to injustice. He consistently used his voice with the intention of teaching and sharing love. His perseverance, empathy, courage, and call to action teaches our scholars the importance of their voice.
