Happy Alaska Day! On October 18, 1867, the U.S. formally acquired Alaska from Russia in a ceremony in Sitka, raising the American flag over the territory for the first time. Each year, Alaska Day commemorates this important moment in history and honors the state’s unique heritage, culture, and natural beauty.   From its breathtaking landscapes to its resilient communities, Alaska continues to play a vital role in shaping the nation’s story. Koniag extends our deepest condolences to all who have been affected by the devastating storm in Western Alaska.   Dozens of homes have been destroyed, forty-nine communities have reported impacts, and over 1,000 survivors have been displaced. On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the Continental Navy with just two ships, marking the beginning of what would become the world’s most powerful naval force. Since then, the U.S. Navy has grown and evolved, protecting our nation’s security, advancing maritime freedom, and standing ready around the globe.   Today, we celebrate the Navy’s 250th Birthday and pay tribute to the generations of Sailors who have served with honor, courage, and commitment.
