In his lecture, Prof. Gaur will trace how the idea of symmetry transcends disciplines, linking the physical sciences with art, architecture, philosophy, and aesthetics. Drawing on examples from #Einstein, #Maxwell, and #EmmyNoether, he will illustrate how hidden symmetries reveal universal principles that shape both natural phenomena and human creativity. The talk will also reflect on how “broken symmetries,” often seen in art and temple architecture, enrich the texture of the world and our aesthetic experience of it. We are delighted to share that Prof. Sachchida Nand Tripathi, Dean, Kotak School of Sustainability - IIT Kanpur has been featured in the 2024 Annual Highlights of Environmental Research Letters (#ERL) for his article “Air pollution from burning biomass in India.” The ERL editorial board selected only 50 papers globally that represent high-impact research shaping policy, science, and public understanding — and this study stands out for illuminating one of India’s most pressing environmental challenges: biomass burning. Biomass burning in India, from household cooking and open waste burning to crop residue and forest fires — is a major but often underestimated source of air pollution. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of its composition, chemistry, and regional dynamics, linking emissions directly to #health and #climate impacts. Key insights include: 🌫️ Biomass burning contributes up to 37% of aerosol oxidative potential in Delhi, underscoring its role in respiratory health risks. 🌾 Crop residue burning, particularly in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, drives PM2.5 levels up to 15 times higher than national air quality standards during peak seasons. 📍 The research highlights the need for region-specific, airshed-based management — moving beyond uniform policy approaches to targeted, evidence-driven interventions. This recognition comes alongside another prestigious honour for Prof. Tripathi — the 2025 Alexander von Humboldt Medal, awarded for his pioneering work in #atmosphericscience and sustained contributions to understanding #airpollution and #climateinteractions. #Hiring: I am looking to hire a Project Staff (Research Associate) for an ongoing project at IIT Kanpur. The project focuses on land–atmosphere interactions and will primarily involve analyzing Hydro-Climate datasets, along with some field work within Kanpur. This work is part of an initiative to improve understanding of land–atmosphere feedbacks and regional climate processes over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, using in-situ flux measurements and modelling approaches.   Desired Qualifications:   1. Master’s degree: M.Tech/M.Sc in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Sciences, Earth Sciences, Climate, Agriculture or related disciplines. 2. Prior experience with handling/analyzing climate datasets. 3. Proficiency in Python, R, or MATLAB is required. 4. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur Researchers Build Eco-Friendly Hut ‘HaritArohi Kutir’ Using Crop Waste and Wild Grass 🌱 In a pioneering step towards sustainable infrastructure, researchers at IIT Kanpur, led by Dr. Deepak Kumar Maurya with Kuldeep Dixit and Shyam Babu under the guidance of Professor C.S. Upadhyay, have developed HaritArohi Kutir—an innovative eco-hut that redefines green construction. Supported by the Kotak School of Sustainability - IIT Kanpur, the hut demonstrates how locally sourced cane grass and agricultural waste can be transformed into high-performance, eco-friendly building materials. 🔹 Built with sandwich panels and eco-bricks that withstand fire (tested up to 1100°C), moisture, and heavy loads (up to 1300 kg) 🔹 Each wall features unique sustainable materials: Kans-struct bricks, Kans-crete bricks, and Kans-boards made from crop residue, resins, lime, jaggery, and lentils 🔹 Applications envisioned in rural housing, eco-resorts, farmhouses, disaster shelters, and sanitation infrastructure The initiative promotes waste valorization, rural employment, and climate resilience, showcasing how innovation at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is driving scalable solutions for a greener future. 🔊 Tested for fire, rain, impact, and environmental degradation, these materials are durable, termite-resistant, and eco-positive—a true leap forward in sustainable design. ✨ This effort underscores #KSS’s commitment to building a sustainable future through innovation, research, and community impact.
