Pouring concrete is pouring concrete, until it's for a bunker housing a 𝙣𝙪𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧. We poured walls up to 10 feet thick and 20 feet tall, all inside an existing building with a roof overhead. The rebar layout alone was an engineering feat, and the mix—designed to shield radioactive byproducts—was so dense that trucks could only haul six cubic yards at a time instead of the usual ten (and we needed 𝟮𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗖𝗬𝘀 total). The coolest part: Nuclear physicists and researchers will use this facility to develop new ways to fight cancer. We don't know much about particle physics, but we know concrete, and we're proud our work helps make theirs possible.

The St. Joseph's Fun Run supports the St. Joseph's Cancer Institute, where we'll be on site through 2029 working on a major design-build campus expansion. When you're somewhere that long, you become part of the community. "Showing up for the communities we're in is just as important as the buildings we deliver," said Tom Bethmann, Layton Healthcare Director. "We're proud to support St. Joseph's and the mission they have here in Stockton." See you at next year's starting line!

𝗨𝘁𝗮𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟰,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀. 𝗨𝗩𝗨 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁. We celebrated the grand opening of The Scott M. Smith College of Engineering and Technology Building at Utah Valley University, 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟲,𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀. The building doubles as a living laboratory where smart sensor technology monitors structural loading, heat gain, and environmental conditions, letting students learn from the structure itself. "This accomplishment reflects the collective strength of dedicated professionals working together toward a shared vision—demonstrating what can be achieved when people unite to deliver something truly significant," said Dave Whimpey, Executive Vice President at Layton. Proud to have built this alongside VCBO Architecture, Reaveley Engineers, Utah's Division of Facilities Construction and Management, and a project team that showed up every day. Go Wolverines! Students, faculty, community partners, and campus leaders gathered last week to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Scott M. Smith Engineering Building — officially opening a long-anticipated addition to Utah Valley University and a major investment in engineering and technology education. Rising five stories, the facility reshapes the campus skyline and establishes a centralized hub for hands-on learning, research, and innovation. As one of the state’s largest buildings dedicated to engineering, it responds directly to growing workforce demand across Utah and the region. The building brings together engineering disciplines, computer science, digital media, and culinary arts within a highly integrated, tech-forward environment. Its form and layout were shaped to maximize efficiency and flexibility, accommodating a range of specialized labs, classrooms, and gathering spaces designed to foster experiential, interdisciplinary learning. Serving as a new campus landmark and gateway, expansive glazing captures sweeping views of the Orem campus, Utah Lake, and the surrounding mountains — a fitting backdrop for a high-impact, collaboration-driven project. We were proud to partner with Utah Valley University and Layton Construction on a facility designed to support the next generation of engineers, technologists, and innovators. #HigherEducationDesign #EducationDesign #EngineeringEducation #UtahArchitecture #VCBOArchitecture

MEALS FROM THE HEARTLAND brought the ingredients and equipment directly to the jobsite, and Hawkeye Area Community Action Program delivered the meals to local food banks. 𝗜𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻-𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽. 𝘼 𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟴 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀. After nearly 30 years playing downtown, Utah Baseball finally has a place of their own on campus: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸. Head coach Gary Henderson said it best: "It gives our kids a home, a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose." The facility sits at the highest point on campus, with views as impressive as the rest: a FieldTurf playing surface, seating for 1,200, plus an outfield berm. Inside? Locker rooms, a weight room, sports medicine suite, indoor hitting tunnels, and a pitching lab brings everything the program needs, finally under one roof. This one took the entire bench. Hats off to University of Utah, Utah Athletics, VCBO Architecture, Populous, and Salt Lake City for all pulling in the same direction to get this done. We were glad to bring it home. First home game is March 6. Play ball!

Situated between the iconic Beverly Hilton and The Los Angeles Country Club, the tower sits above a six-level podium and will deliver a limited number of residences, each with a private balcony and a pool on every floor. Layton EVP Tyler Dillon and Eric Wilson, Head of Construction at Cain, share what it takes to build something like this—and what it means to bring a project of this scale to #LosAngeles. Phased completion is slated to begin in 2027. More to come.
