LAFLA’s Permanency Project has helped over 160 clients apply for lawful permanent residency thanks to the incredible support of student volunteers from University of California, Irvine School of Law and pro bono attorneys from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. At our recent clinic, students assisted 8 clients from Russia, Uganda, Guatemala, and Venezuela seeking refuge from global insecurity. These young advocates received guidance and training from LAFLA's expert staff and our pro bono volunteers, who will continue to help our clients on their journey to safety and security. We're so grateful to these dedicated advocates and our pro bono partners for making this important work possible! Shoutout to Marta, Christine, and Dominique on our team for their work supporting this event.

As part of our “Alternative Break” program, UC Irvine Law students spent part of their fall break working on The Permanency Project offered through the Michael G. Ermer Pro Bono Program, led by Anna Strasburg Davis. In collaboration with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) and attorneys from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP — a project that has been going on since 2014 — students assisted clients who were previously granted visas as victims of crime and are now eligible to apply for permanent legal residency. Under attorney supervision, students conducted client interviews, completed application packets, and gained hands-on experience. Second-year students Adelaide Apostol and Akua Kesewa-Agyeman, and third-year student Madeleine Malicdem served as student leaders. Thank you to LAFLA and the attorneys at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP for their mentorship and collaboration on this important pro bono project that has helped over 160 victims of crime seek permanent residency since the program launched in 2014.

This week, ALIGHT was honored to participate in the #LA Start Anew Clinic, where more than 120 survivors of #humantrafficking, #domesticviolence and #sexualassault accessed legal and social service resources under one roof. We were grateful for the opportunity to share information about ALIGHT's multi-jurisdictional legal support, including credit repair under the #DBRA, helping survivors break free from cycles of payday lending and financial exploitation. It was a pleasure to present alongside colleagues from Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST) and Community Legal Aid SoCal, and to collaborate with dedicated partners from Survivor Justice Center, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, Public Law Center and Bet Tzedek Legal Services to strengthen referral pathways across California. We deeply appreciate the daily work of Downtown Women's Center, YWCA Greater Los Angeles, Restoration Diversion, Haven Hills and others helping survivors move forward in safety and dignity. Our thanks to #ALIGHT Board Chair Kelsey Bryan, Roman Darmer, Paige Goedderz, Christopher Haines and others on the Jones Day team for organizing such a thoughtful and accessible event with the The California Endowment. Together, we can continue helping survivors move toward stability and brighter futures, one step at a time. #MobilizingJustice #HumanTraffickingAwareness #SurvivorCentered #LegalAccess #PartnershipInAction #LosAngeles

Proud to have volunteered with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles at Glendale Community College with Megan Jenkins for a pro bono outreach event last week! At a time when access to justice feels more critical than ever, organizations like LAFLA play a vital role in ensuring that individuals and families, regardless of income, can understand and exercise their legal rights. From housing and employment issues to consumer protection and immigration, legal aid bridges the gap between law and those most in need of its protection. Grateful for the opportunity to connect with the community, contribute to meaningful work, and witness the impact of legal advocacy in action. Excited to continue developing my legal knowledge and public service experience as I work toward a career in law and policy.
