ESRF-EBS celebrates 5 years!🎉 Today, the ESRF marks five years since the Extremely Brilliant Source (ERS-EBS), a revolutionary new high-energy synchrotron, began operation. Opened to the international user community on 25 August 2020, following a major upgrade, ESRF-EBS has proven to be a game changer for science in Europe and beyond, enabling breakthroughs across a wide range of fields — from health and energy to materials research, environmental science, and cultural heritage. Its exceptional capabilities have empowered researchers to explore living matter and materials with a level of detail that was previously out of reach — helping to address some of our society’s most pressing challenges. “The EBS has already enabled amazing breakthroughs in a number of scientific areas, advancing knowledge and contributing to solving major challenges our societies are facing,” says Jean Daillant. “This is, however, just the beginning of the story. Beyond this extraordinary achievement, the ESRF is strongly committed to fully unleash its potential by developing innovative hardware and software, already looking ahead to new horizons and preparing for the next generation of synchrotrons.”

We’ve cut the ribbon! 🎉The Swiss Light Source SLS is officially inaugurated! Today, Thursday 21 August, PSI welcomed around 150 guests from politics, business and science to celebrate the successful upgrade, including Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and Martina Bircher, member of the cantonal government and Head of the Department of Education, Culture and Sport of the Canton of Aargau. “The SLS was at its inception and is now after its comprehensive upgrade a national infrastructure built for the common good,” said PSI Director Christian Rüegg. “It is a tool for Swiss researchers and industry, and our international guests to answer questions that matter for the future of people and the planet.” With the upgrade, SLS joins only a handful of other light sources in the world using the next-generation of synchrotron technology. Now the Swiss Light Source SLS looks forward to welcoming back the scientists who will use its light to begin a new chapter of research.
