The Great Salt Lake is a strong example of a U.S. lithium brine resource, with an estimated 1.4 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent in the North Arm of the lake. We’ve proven that Lilac IX works on this challenging brine and are now progressing toward building a commercial facility to bring a new domestic source of lithium online.
The U.S. could become a major supplier of lithium for batteries in the next few years after the Trump administration took a stake in the developer of a massive mine in Nevada. But Silicon Valley startup Lilac Solutions thinks it’s got a better idea that avoids the higher costs and environmental harms of traditional mining: extract the pricey mineral from briny water at oil fields and sites like the Great Salt Lake in Utah instead of digging it out of the ground. https://lnkd.in/eQMMHd68 (Photo: Frederic J. There’s a tremendous amount of lithium right here in the U.S., in brine resources including the Great Salt Lake and petrobrines. Lilac’s tech excels at producing lithium from briny water, and we plan to do it in Utah at our first commercial facility. Alan Ohnsman tells the story in today’s Forbes feature. Our technology enables customers to produce lithium from any type of brine resource: salars, petrobrines, geothermal, or briny surface lakes. Appreciate Alan and Forbes for shining a spotlight on what Lilac is up to. https://lnkd.in/ewkB4qMk

We had a great time hosting Alexander C. Kaufman for MIT Technology Review in August. Alex joined us on the shores of the Great Salt Lake to see firsthand how we’re extracting lithium from this domestic resource, and proving that Lilac IX can economically produce from one of the toughest brines in the world. #anybrineanywhere
I have a big new feature in MIT Technology Review, with some exclusive news. In August, I became the first journalist to visit the direct lithium extraction startup Lilac's demonstration plant on the remote North Arm of the Great Salt Lake. Now the company is building what could be the first major new source of lithium to come online in the U.S., and the only commercial plant producing the metal through the much greener, less water-intensive, next-generation technology known as DLE. Once it's pilot plant comes online, it could double U.S. lithium production overnight. Thanks to Rachel Courtland for editing. You can read the feature here, and check out some outtakes of my photography https://lnkd.in/efXMpUMg

Honored to be featured by MIT Technology Review. Our lithium pilot on the shores of the Great Salt Lake proved that Lilac IX can economically produce lithium from one of the toughest brines in the world, a strong step toward new domestic supply. #anybrineanywhere #directlithiumextraction #domesticcriticalminerals
Lilac Solutions is pioneering a new type of lithium extraction that could double US production in two years and shake up the industry.

The results are in! We’ve proven that Lilac IX can economically produce lithium from the Great Salt Lake, a really tough brine with a lithium concentration of only ~70 mg/L and high impurity levels. This is a strong validation of U.S. technology on a U.S. resource, and a major step toward making this one of the nearest-term domestic lithium projects to come online. 43 million tons of lithium carbonate equivalent is a really significant brine resource. We recently completed a pilot with Neptune Energy in the Altmark that proved Lilac’s ion exchange DLE can produce battery-grade lithium carbonate directly from this brine. Exciting potential for Europe’s lithium supply chain.
Neptune Energy confirms one of the world’s largest Lithium resources A recent independent assessment by international valuation agency Sproule ERCE has confirmed a resource base of 43 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) for our Altmark Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) Project – placing it among the largest project-based lithium resources globally. This evaluation highlights the remarkable potential of our licensed areas in northern Saxony-Anhalt, underlining our commitment to securing a reliable lithium supply for Germany and Europe. A third pilot test, focused on evaluating an adsorption-based extraction technology, has been underway since mid-September. 👉 Curious to learn more? Goodbye for now, Germany! Our seventh #lithium field pilot/demo is complete and marked several firsts for Lilac: ● This was our first collaboration with Neptune Energy, ● our first project in Europe, ● our first pilot on gas well-associated brine, ● our first time making battery-grade lithium carbonate on-site, ● and the first all-female shift in our field rotation! With operations completed, our mobile pilot has been decommissioned, packed up, and is now en route to the next customer site in Europe. Onward! #letsgetthatlithium #europeanlithium #directlithiumextraction #batterymaterials #criticalminerals
