A shoutout to our third rail crew, foreman Amos Charles and third rail mechanics Joseph Chucchiara and Waldemar Mendez—named MTA Heroes this past week! The three men came across an injured red-tailed hawk in Malverne that couldn't fly. Thanks to their quick action and a call to the Department of Environmental Conservation, the hawk was safely taken to a local sanctuary to recover. https://lnkd.in/e5wHyGfy
About us
The Long Island Rail Road is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carrying an average of 301,000 customers each weekday on 735 daily trains. Chartered on April 24, 1834, it is also the oldest railroad still operating under its original name. Thee LIRR system is comprised of over 700 miles of track on 11 different branches, stretching from Montauk -- on the eastern tip of Long Island -- to the refurbished Penn Station in the heart of Manhattan, approximately 120 miles away. Along the way, the LIRR serves 124 stations in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, providing service for some 82 million customers each year, taking them to and from jobs, homes, schools, sporting events, concerts, beaches, Broadway shows, and the multitude of other attractions around the New York metropolitan region. Today, we gathered at the Hillside Support Facility to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. The ceremony was a meaningful tribute to the brave individuals who gave their lives to protect our freedoms. As we approach Memorial Day, we reflect with gratitude and respect on their courage, commitment, and selflessness.

We're working to improve accessibility on the LIRR, replacing ramps, platforms, and walkways at Forest Hills Station. Look forward to a new and improved waiting room, restrooms, additional stairs, and ramp to the westbound platform. While we make the station more accessible, please note that there are off-peak service changes at Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, and Woodside stations. View the changes and plan your trip with TrainTime. Long Island Rail Road reposted this
Progress report: Ridership is up and fare evasion is down. Here’s how we’re keeping up the momentum ⬇️ ✅ We’re investing in service, including adding more subway, bus, and commuter rail trips, and implementing a comprehensive redesign of the Queens bus network coming this summer. ✅ We’re making it easier than ever for people to pay their fare: Tap-and-go is available to all subway and bus riders, including students, Fair Fares riders, and Reduced-Fare customers. ✅ We’re tackling fare and toll evasion by making physical changes to stations and sustaining enforcement on subways, buses, commuter rails, and bridge and tunnel crossings.
