In his new article for the American Bar Association’s Franchise Law Journal, Jim Long examines a recent decision of the Minnesota Supreme Court clarifying two important aspects of the Minnesota Franchise Act (“MFA”). First, the case addresses the intersection between the MFA’s exception to the definition of franchise fee for the purchase of goods at a bona fide wholesale price with its provision providing that “any payment for …services” constitutes a franchise fee. Second, it clarified the jurisdictional reach of the relationship provisions of the MFA, which the statutory language does not expressly address. Jim was one of the attorneys who tried the three-week jury trial and subsequently argued the appeals to the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Minnesota Supreme Court. We're excited for a new UPLIFT season! Attorneys and law students: Please consider volunteering as a coach, and share this with your network.
Because it has never been more important to make a difference for the future! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Maslon LLP proudly supports UPLIFT Legal Institute for Teens, a non-profit mock trial program serving middle and high school students across the Twin Cities, seeking to build a future where the Twin Cities legal community reflects the neighborhoods we serve. UPLIFT empowers students from underserved communities to explore the legal profession, build confidence, and develop critical thinking and advocacy skills through hands-on mentorship and trial preparation. For the 2025–2026 school year, UPLIFT is expanding to five schools, and we’re seeking attorneys and law students to serve as volunteer coaches. Coaches meet with students weekly from October through March (about 2 hours per week) to teach legal concepts, analyze a case, and guide them in preparing a full mock trial—performed in a real courtroom at a local law school. Please consider volunteering or sending this coaching role to someone you know who may be interested in joining us - https://lnkd.in/gwx6wVnk Contact me or Angie Roell with any questions!
