Our mission is to research, build, and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity.

About us

MASS creates well-built environments using appropriate design, local investment, and innovation to break the cycle of poverty. We collaborate with governments, NGOs, private sector firms, and health care experts to advocate for the most underserved and provide scalable models of community-based development and training. MASS Design Group has shown that innovation, driven by interdisciplinary research and immersion in the field, can deliver well-built environments that are efficient, effective, and empowering. By addressing immediate infrastructural needs and simultaneously building systems to address the social determinants of failure, our work constructs agency, serves as an engine for economic growth, and assures long-term sustainability. We build capacity at all levels—from training unskilled laborers to assisting government ministries in writing policies that establish more holistic and appropriate project outcomes.

  • What does it mean to create balance, where both people and planet can thrive together? Flourishing is about ensuring everyone has the basic things they need to live with dignity and opportunity, while staying within the limits of what the Earth can sustain. It is about building a fair and sustainable future where all life can flourish. Flourishing, the third session at Abundant Futures / Live, will explore how design, culture, and collective action can help us rise above the social foundation, respect planetary boundaries, and imagine abundant futures for generations to come. For more information on the event, speakers, and how to register, visit aflive.org.

  • MASS is leading a Neighborhood Stabilization Plan for Santa Fe's Hopewell Mann Neighborhood — a year-long effort to ensure that future development in and around Midtown happens equitably, fairly, and affordably while minimizing gentrification and displacement to the adjacent community. We are thrilled to be working with chainbreaker collective, Santa Fe Indigenous Center, and The City of Santa Fe Metropolitan Development Agency, over the coming months to hear directly from residents and local businesses. • We are deeply saddened by the news of Kongjian Yu's passing. We recently had the privilege of getting to know him through our work in Rwanda, and his role on the jury of the Veronica Rudge Green Prize. Kongjian's vision and voice have left an indelible mark on the field, and he will be greatly missed.

  • As we reflect on #ClimateWeek2025, we want to share how housing can be regenerative, affordable, and beautiful. MASS designs and builds communities that reconnect residents with nature and advance a future where people and the planet thrive. Our work goes beyond energy metrics to promote well-being, engage with the climate, and restore ecosystems. J.J. Carroll House, a partnership between 2Life Communities and the Boston Housing Authority, empowers residents to live in community. It provides 142 affordable apartments for older adults, a ground floor health center, and a front park with an intergenerational play area. It is the largest passive house building in Massachusetts and ranks among the top 10 largest in the U.S. and Canada. Partnering with 2Life again, MASS designed a 150-unit affordable senior housing project in Lynn, Massachusetts. Solimine House will include a restored landscape area open to the community and inspired by a nearby 2,200-acre municipal forest. The former site, with a footprint of nearly 70 percent concrete and asphalt, will be transformed into a regenerative environment that doubles the green space, prioritizes people over cars, and supports the return of local biodiversity. Inside, three-season porches provide access to fresh air and outdoor living close to apartments. The semi-outdoor, covered areas are designed to provide thermal comfort throughout most of the year by optimizing solar heat gain in winter and natural ventilation in the summer, thereby extending residents' ability to enjoy open-air social spaces. #2LifeCommunities #JJCarroll #BostonHousingAuthority #regenerativemetropolis #passivehouse Passive House Institute | iPHA

  • Belonging is more than a feeling, it’s about building communities of trust, memory, and shared purpose. It’s about creating spaces where everyone has not only a place, but also access to opportunity. At Abundant Futures / Live, our Belonging session will bring together stories from across the globe, entrepreneurship in Malawi, education in Somalia, Indigenous sovereignty and cultural perpetuation, and the ways public art, libraries, and philanthropy can spark collective action. This conversation will remind us that belonging is not just something we experience individually, it’s something we build together. It’s a commitment to shaping the future with joy as well as reckoning, and ensuring that everyone has the chance to thrive. • What does it mean to design a world where everyone can thrive in body and mind? From maternal and newborn health to affordable housing, from disability justice to youth development, wellbeing is about more than survival, it is about dignity, care, and vitality. Wellbeing, the first session of Abundant Futures / Live, will explore how the places we create shape the conditions of our daily lives, and how design can help ensure that health and opportunity are shared foundations of an abundant future.
