PACE (Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly) is an alternative to nursing home care that - through an interdisciplinary team (IDT) of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, therapists, transportation coordinators and providers and aides - coordinates and provides preventive, primary, acute, and long-term care services, so older individuals and individuals with disabilities can continue living in the community. MassPACE is a 501c(6) association whose mission is, through advocacy, education, and policy research, to provide leadership and support for growth, access, quality, and success of PACE in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Last week, MassPACE went to New York for the National PACE® Association’s Annual Conference! We had a great time meeting some of our affiliates and learning more about various companies that share our goal of preserving independence for older adults. CHA was represented by Alison Horowitz, MSW, LICSW, CCM, who gave a talk entitled "Implementing Self-Directed Personal Care in PACE: A Win-Win-Win" along with AtlantiCARE Life Connection and Fallon Health Weinberg - PACE. Upham’s Community Care was proud to welcome Senator Markey for an important discussion about protecting and sustaining access to community-based health care. At Upham’s, we serve one of the most diverse and resilient communities in Massachusetts through a network of care that includes primary care, behavioral health, home health, pharmacy, and PACE services for older adults. We’re grateful to Senator Markey for taking the time to meet with our staff and partners to hear firsthand about the challenges and innovations happening on the front lines of care. From our Home Health Care program — started decades ago when few agencies served our neighborhood — to our community pharmacy, created to ensure access when for-profit chains closed their doors, Upham’s continues to step up to meet community needs. Programs like the 340B Drug Pricing Program and the Section 330 grant make it possible for community health centers like ours to serve everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Sustained, bipartisan support for these programs ensures that all families, elders, and patients can continue to receive the care they deserve. Fallon Health announces the expansion of its Summit ElderCare program into Southeastern Massachusetts, offering a new option for older adults and their caregivers in Bristol, Plymouth, and parts of Barnstable counties. This month, we’re celebrating PACE by introducing you to some of the incredible providers who make our program possible. Throughout September, we’ll spotlight a different member of our care team—sharing their background, clinical interests, and a fun fact or two. Follow along to get to know the people who care for and support our participants every day here at PACE. Debbie Barnes, Family Nurse Practitioner PACE Center: Savin Hill/Dorchester When did you join PACE? Originally in 1996; I left and rejoined PACE in 2010. Educational Background: University of Connecticut (studied math and science). I did my nursing education at MGH Health Institute. Clinical Interests: Geriatrics and Homecare (I worked in this area for 10 years). Non-Clinical Interests: I love gardening, my 2 cats, and travelling.
