Work is progressing steadily at the UCSF Helen Diller Hospital project, where multiple scopes are being executed in highly coordinated phases. In one confined section of the site, Malcolm Drilling completed pile chipping and lagging adjacent to McGuire and Hester’s structural excavation efforts. With limited space and concurrent heavy equipment use, safety remained the central focus, supported by detailed pre-task planning and close communication between crews. In the B1L area, excavation and pile chipping have wrapped up, clearing the way for Webcor Concrete and Pacific Steel Group to begin installing the dense pile cap rebar layout. McGuire and Hester’s underground team is now collaborating with Webcor and PSG to install pile cap penetrations as rebar placement nears completion. Each phase reflects the high level of coordination required to keep this complex build moving forward. At McGuire and Hester, teamwork is second nature. But when it comes to bocce ball, so is competition. Our teams brought serious focus and energy to the court. Bruce, Courtney, Isaac, and Aaron came out on top by working together with precision and consistency. Luke, Neal, John, and Matt earned second with strong communication and competitive spirit. With the installation of the second Wolff 1250B tower crane, The UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital project became the first in North America to operate two of these cranes, of which only 10 exist. These are some of the largest free-standing cranes in the world. These massive cranes were selected based on their ability to hoist columns that routinely weight more than 60,000 pounds, 28,000 less than the cranes' maximum capacity. The video features the first crane installed being used to install the second back in May. Our annual Equipment Rodeo returned last week, providing our interns with a hands-on, high-impact day in the field. The morning began with a safety briefing and continued with rotating training sessions on dust control, water truck operation, and equipment walkarounds led by our experienced crews. Midday, the team broke for a well-earned taco lunch before heading into the highlight of the event—the excavator challenge. Interns put their skills to the test by maneuvering a basketball off a cone and into a bin 10 feet away using an excavator, all while racing against the clock. Congratulations to Kolby Soule from our Sacramento office for earning the fastest time and taking home this year’s title. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible.
