🧠BANK: In a major expansion, the Michigan Brain Bank has moved to a new location at the University of Michigan North Campus Research Complex. The move allows the research team to efficiently store and catalogue hundreds of priceless, donated samples that make up its collection, without concern for equipment failure or space limitations. The Michigan Brain Bank has contributed to studies of many brain diseases, including Alzheimer's, Ataxia, Parkinson's, Huntington's, ALS and psychiatric diseases. “As a result, staff at the Brain Bank are able to quickly process incoming tissue and organize shipments to investigators from around the world who apply to use banked samples,” said Dr. Sami Barmada, director of the Michigan Brain Bank. “This is a significant boon that will help maintain this precious resource for years to come.” Learn more about how people with brain-related conditions can join the research studies that the Brain Bank partners with for donations: https://michmed.org/AQ8xg

Just over one month ago, U-M sophomore Ethan King marked one year since he collapsed on a run during his first week of college. With timely CPR intervention that included two bystanders, a student and a physician, King made it to the hospital and was able to recover from his cardiac arrest. Over the last year, he has been incredibly active. In school, King started studying aerospace engineering. He continues to run with Michigan Club Running and joined soccer and sailing teams. He remains involved in Cardiac Arrest Preparation, a CPR club he co-founded that has trained over 350 students. King has also traveled the world, sailing in the Bahamas with his family and visiting South Korea and Scotland with friends. “I am incredibly grateful for this extra year and so happy that I have been able to make these memories with the people close to me," King said. October 16 is World Restart a Heart Day, a global initiative to increase awareness about bystander CPR. On October 14, the University of Michigan Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Department of Emergency Medicine will celebrate Ethan and other recent survivors of cardiac arrest, along with several providers who participated in their care. Food insecurity is more common among children with a chronic medical condition than those without one, new Michigan Medicine research suggests. The study also identified a stepwise increase in food insecurity risk: the more chronic conditions a child had, the higher the likelihood their household experienced food insecurity. “Our findings highlight how critical it is to protect and strengthen national policies to address food insecurity in children,” said lead author Nina Hill, M.D., of the Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research Center (CHEAR). More on the new findings: michmed.org/KD7YM
