Chief Economist William Lee cautions that China is actively seeking to maintain its monopoly over new technologies by restricting exports of rare earths and critical battery components. He criticizes US negotiators for ignoring the bigger picture about future tech supply and standards, while touting small victories (like the TikTok deal). On markets, Lee cautions that high valuations in AI and tech may be vulnerable to correction, as tangible productivity gains from AI applications have not yet materialized. We’re celebrating a season of progress and partnership across the Milken Institute’s Africa programmatic work. 🌍 This fall, we welcomed new members to our Africa Leadership Council, advancing our shared vision of empowering African nations to fully participate in global capital markets. Our Global Financial Scholars Programs—run in collaboration with the World Bank Group and with support from the Motsepe Foundation—continue to grow, now reaching nearly 300 alumni from 65 markets. This year, 42 new scholars representing 27 countries and 34 institutions joined our programs in Washington, DC, and London. From Nigeria to Tanzania to Seville, our Africa team convened policymakers, investors, and innovators to discuss mobilizing long-term capital, scaling blended finance, and strengthening Africa’s financial leadership. As we look ahead, we remain focused on connecting talent, capital, and ideas to accelerate inclusive growth across Africa and emerging markets. We're grateful to British Robinson for her leadership as our chair for Africa. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dQ4Md_ei #Africa #MIGlobal #capitalmarkets
