Their case study, General Iron's proposed move from Lincoln Park to 116th Street by the Calumet River, demonstrated the power of maps in outlining inequities. Mansueto Institute faculty lead Prof. Christopher Berry was on hand at the Neighborhood Economics conference earlier this week with Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi, CFA. Berry discussed his research on Kaegi's improvements in the Cook County Assessor's Office, which have led to savings of $1.9 billion in property taxes since 2019.
At yesterday's Neighborhood Economics gathering, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi, CFA joined University of Chicago Professor Christopher Berry in a panel discussion on the new research that shows reforms at the Assessor's Office have saved the owners of low and middle-priced homes $1.9 billion in property taxes since 2019. Assessor Kaegi spoke about the importance of technology, transparency, and data-gathering in making these reforms a reality, as well as the work that must still be done to close the gap between commercial and residential assessments. This panel discussion was moderated by Heather Worthington (she/her) of Urban3.
