We’re thrilled to announce that the UC San Diego Humanities and Social Sciences Building Repair has been honored with the 2025 Preservation Design Award for Craftsmanship/Preservation Technology from the California Preservation Foundation. Our team including UC San Diego Capital Program Management, Historic Architect Architectural Resources Group, Coffman Engineers, LandLAB_ landLAB landscape architecture + environmental design, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH), Rudolph and Sletten, Willis Construction Co., Inc. collaborated to replace the entire tower building façade with new curtain wall precast panels. Because it is a historic building, the newly designed pre-cast wall system had to match the original system in all visual qualities, meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, and undergo environmental (CEQA), California Coastal Commission, and UC San Diego Design Review Board approvals. The University also wanted the new panels to meet or exceed strict performance criteria including improved thermal performance and weather resistance. Completed in about 16 months, the new pre-cast concrete panel skin of the building is indistinguishable from the original system. Selected by a distinguished jury of experts in architecture, engineering, planning, and history, this award recognizes the exceptional dedication and skill that went into preserving this landmark. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this incredible achievement! Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners reposted this
As we reflect on the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we feel privileged to have led the revitalization and transformation of the site and district where he delivered his final large-scale public address in the Bay Area. The Lower Sproul Redevelopment project is home to the MLK Jr. Student Union building. Completed in 2015, this student-driven initiative reimagined existing mid-century buildings to create a more resilient future centered around student governance. The new construction and adaptive reuse of the student life and arts district has become a catalyst in furthering the legacy of this historic site, simultaneously modernizing its infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the campus and community. #UCBerkeley #moorerubleyudell #architects #planners #MLKJrDay #civilrightsleader #SproulPlaza #history #StudentUnion

As the wildfires in Southern California are still active, and represent an unpredictable threat, it is already clear that the extent of the devastation is unprecedented. We at Moore Ruble Yudell are truly moved and saddened by the trauma of deeply personal loss that so many have suffered. Communities we know and value in the Palisades, Altadena, and elsewhere are changed forever. We are filled with gratitude for the courage and commitment of first responders who have come from all over the country and beyond, and those who individually stood guard and helped to rescue their own and neighbors’ homes. We have begun conversations with friends and colleagues to explore how we can help heal and renew these cherished places and communities. For the present, we send our deepest sympathy, and hope that all of those affected find strength and support in the months ahead.

We are very proud of our good friend Kevin Keim, Director of the Charles Moore Foundation and the work he is doing to help preserve our communities. Read the Curbed article that documents his experience flying in from Austin, TX during the recent fires in the Palisades to join the efforts on the ground. https://lnkd.in/gWUkJ9AH Photo: Kevin Keim
