Last night, the NAACP Center for Health Equity joined forces with the Greater Cleveland NAACP and prominent voices in the health industry to discuss the impact of heart and cardiovascular diseases on the Black community. Together, we sparked important conversations, shared actionable solutions, and discussed the steps we can take toward building a healthier, more equitable future for our communities. Beyond a health issue, this is a civil rights and social justice issue. In 2018, I found myself feeling trapped and unhappy in my desk job. I had bravely applied for a graphic design position, pouring my heart into the application and almost pleading for an opportunity, only to be met with the disappointment of being told I lacked the necessary experience—experience I was desperately trying to acquire. But in 2019, the NAACP opened their doors for me, and that moment changed everything. Over the past six years, I’ve been blessed beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve created magazine ads for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and GQ, seen my designs come to life on billboards in Times Square and Washington, DC, spoke on a Webby Awards panel, fully designed four conventions, and won three Davey Awards. Each milestone has been a testament to the journey I embarked on, and receiving the Medgar Evers Award has profoundly solidified my commitment to the NAACP. I am eternally grateful for this incredible opportunity to utilize my talents in service of such a vital mission and to promote awareness on important issues. More than anything, I am profoundly thankful for my amazing team. They have stood by me, provided unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement every step of the way.
