NAMI is deeply alarmed by reports of significant staffing cuts at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that threaten to weaken the stability of our nation’s mental health and substance use systems—especially during a time of growing need. SAMHSA’s leadership in advancing prevention, treatment, and crisis care—especially through initiatives like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline—is essential. These professionals help millions of Americans access hope, healing, and community support. As the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, NAMI calls on policymakers to protect and strengthen SAMHSA’s capacity to serve people and families in every community. Now more than ever, we must invest in the people and programs that make recovery possible. The work of the staff at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) saves lives. Unfortunately, mass staff reduction of force risks the progress we’ve made as a country in addressing our mental health crisis – a crisis that impacts nearly every family in every corner of our country. https://lnkd.in/eBWWmt2e

According to the International OCD Foundation, 1 in 40 adults are affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD. During #OCDAwarenessWeek, we invite you to learn more about this mental health condition by checking out our partners at the International OCD Foundation, and visiting nami.org/OCD Listen as our Director of External Relations, Kate, shares her lived experience with perinatal OCD. Find the full episode at the following link: https://bit.ly/4kieHLZ
Perinatal OCD can turn the joy of new parenthood into constant fear with relentless intrusive thoughts. "What if I hurt my baby?" "What if something terrible happens?" These thoughts are often mistaken as simple anxiety, but they can be symptoms of a serious, often overlooked condition that affects parents of any gender during pregnancy or after birth. Earlier this year, NAMI ’s Hope Starts with Us podcast featured a powerful conversation between three mothers who spoke openly about these fears. Their stories show how recognizing perinatal OCD can be the first step toward treatment, understanding, and healing. On Indigenous Peoples Day, we’re amplifying a truth from Michelle Negrete: progress requires partnership—not just treatment. That means sustained funding and long-term collaboration with community-led, culturally grounded Native organizations so care aligns with tribal values. Let’s prioritize Native voices and capacity-building across Indian Country. ____________ Resources: nami.org/indigenous | If you someone you care for is in crisis: call or text 988
