The NFF works with communities and organizations to conserve and enhance the watersheds, wildlife habitat and wild places across our 193-million-acre National Forest System. Mission The National Forest Foundation (NFF), chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System, and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests. Our Values Our National Forests and Grasslands are at the core of America's natural riches, and yet, today these treasures are threatened by unprecedented challenges. Working with the U.S. Forest Service and partners, our goal is to leverage our best thinking, conservation capacity and community action to measurably improve the health of our National Forests and Grasslands. Core values guide our work. In all of our strategies, we strive to: -Unite the power of diverse interests and communities in collaborative stewardship; -Restore ecosystems to their natural resiliency and functions through on-the-ground conservation; -Engage Americans, young and old, in recognizing the gifts of our National Forests and Grasslands and in caring for them; -Sustain the commitment and ability of communities to serve as stewards by building the capacity of collaborative organizations; and -Add value where action would not otherwise be taken.

Like a witch takes to the sky on their broom, this species can also fly through the night...on a giant web, that is. The Joro spider, also known as a “parachuting spider,” is an invasive species native to east Asia that has been spotted in forests throughout the southeast. Here’s four facts about the giant, orb-weaver spider that might give you the creepy crawlies. 🕸️ When fully grown, the female spider’s body can grow up to an inch long, while its legs can span up to 3 to 4 inches. ️🕸️ Tiny, baby Joro spiders can use a tactic called ballooning to create strands of silk that allow them to harness the power of the wind and travel to new locations. 🕸️ It's named after a mythological Japanese spider demon named mythological creature named Jorogumo. 🕸️ It’s known for spinning large, intricate, wheel-shaped webs – some as wide as 10 feet. 🕸️ They eat various insects including stink bugs, yellow jackets and mosquitoes. They’ve also been known to feed on a pest that has been threatening trees and agricultural crops in New Jersey and other eastern states for the past few years – the spotted lanternfly. 📷 Photo submitted in the #NationalForestWeek Photo Contest by Jamarcus Gaston | Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, Georgia #WildlifeWednesday

How the gentle wind, beckons through the leaves, as autumn colors fall. 🐸🫖 🍂 Talladega National Forest in the fall reminds us of The Unknown from Over the Garden Wall — colorful, magical and mysterious. One of three National Forests in Alabama, the Talladega is home to the expansive Pinhoti Trails System and the 7,245-acre Cheaha Wilderness, the latter offering higher elevations with numerous overlooks for panoramic views of east-central Alabama. Speaking of Over the Garden Wall, what’s your favorite quote from the series? Ours is, “Did you know that dinosaurs had big ears, but everyone forgot because dinosaur ears don't have bones?" 📷 Photo submitted to the NFF’s annual #NationalForestWeek photo contest by Jesse Adams | Talladega National Forest, Alabama
