Last Saturday, the first cohort of NHF's Bridging Horizons Intergenerational Interns convened for a training on data collection and program evaluation at our new Arleta Recuperative Care site. This team of young professionals includes future leaders in urban planning, public health, social work, psychology, deaf studies, and more! Stay tuned as we implement programming with our Arleta guests and identify best practices to holistic #recuperativecare. We want to also thank L.A. Care Health Plan for their support for this innovative and impactful program.

Improving the health of communities by tackling social determinants of health.
About us
Founded in 1973, National Health Foundation is a nonprofit that works within under-resourced Southern California communities to eliminate barriers to health, address the root causes of poor health, and find solutions that lead to lasting change. Embracing the guiding philosophy that health begins where we live, learn, work and play, the organization’s advocacy and work focuses on four key areas: housing, food access, built environment and education. We are committed to changing the physical and social landscape of vulnerable neighborhoods and empowering individuals to make choices that allow them to live a long, healthy life, regardless of their income, education or ethnic background.

We are excited to be a part of this work and grateful for California Association of Food Banks & L.A. Care Health Plan support!
We’re thrilled to announce that L.A. Care Health Plan is supporting our efforts to fight hunger in Los Angeles County through a generous grant 🎉 We are supporting efforts to address food insecurity across Los Angeles County through #CalFresh outreach! With this funding, we’re partnering with 10 incredible organizations to expand access to nutritious food for low-income residents: 💚 Community Services Unlimited Inc. 💚 National Health Foundation 💚 St. Margaret's Center (Catholic Charities of LA) 💚 Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation 💚 Chinatown Service Center 華埠服務中心 💚 Help Me Help You 💚 Maternal and Child Health Access 💚 Los Angeles Regional Food Bank 💚 Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) 💚 Rio Hondo College This project is funded in part by L.A. Care Health Plan and will benefit low-income and uninsured residents of Los Angeles County. Investments like these help families access the healthy food they deserve. Thank you, L.A. Dear Mr. Blake Koehler, On behalf of the National Health Foundation, We would like to extend our sincere gratitude for your thoughtful shoutout and recognition of the work we do for the community. Your acknowledgment means so much to us and further fuels our commitment to improving the lives of those who need it most. It is heartening to know that our efforts are making a meaningful impact. Together we can continue to do the work.
Continuing my series on organizations doing incredible work, today I want to highlight the National Health Foundation (NHF!). NHF is focused on breaking down the barriers that keep people from being healthy—things like lack of stable housing, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare. One of the ways they do this is through recuperative care, which provides a safe, supportive place for people to heal after being discharged from the hospital. Without it, many folks experiencing homelessness end up recovering on the streets or bouncing back into the ER, making it nearly impossible to get better. I’ve had the chance to visit their facilities, and I was genuinely impressed by the care and thought they’ve put into making sure people are taken care of in a way that is both cost-effective and deeply human. Recuperative care is cheaper than extended hospital stays, but NHF doesn’t just focus on the numbers—they make sure their spaces reflect how each of us would want to be treated if we were in that situation. It’s the kind of work that’s both smart and compassionate—a rare but powerful combination. Since 2018, NHF has provided over 85,000 nights of safe shelter for people recovering from serious health conditions. They also work directly with communities to connect families to food benefits, improve local health resources, and create long-term solutions for better well-being. What really stands out about NHF is their focus on real, lasting change. They’re not just treating symptoms—they’re tackling the root causes of poor health and working alongside communities to make a real difference. If you want to see a healthcare approach that actually works for people, check them out: nhfca.org Dr. Felita Jones & team, you are amazing!

We're grateful to have been a part of this. Thank you.
That’s a wrap on the inaugural 2024 California Recuperative Care Symposium! Thanks to National Health Care for the Homeless Council and National Institute for Medical Respite Care for a great conference. The #CRCS24 theme was Cross Organizational Solutions for a Seamless System of Care and we could not agree more that integrating systems of care is essential to provide high-quality, culturally competent care. We heard about the opportunities to transform recuperative care with #CalAIM, the importance of cross-organization partnerships like the LA Recuperative Care Learning Network, and proudly observed the progress of our #capacitybuilding grantee, National Health Foundation’s, Interim Senior Housing Site in Arleta. With the growing number of older Californians experiencing homelessness, it is crucial to break down silos and bridge health and social care. We look forward to continuing this important work with all of the supporters and participants from #CSCR2024!

We’d like to thank Governor Gavin Newsom and our legislators for passing Assembly Bill 107- Budget Act of 2024. This ensures Market Match remains in the state budget, but our biggest gratitude goes to the frontline workers, including our CalFresh Promotores and community advocates. Your dedication over the past few months has been essential in preserving Market Match and ensuring food access for families. We made a difference! 🌟🙌 #communityheroes #marketmatch #calfresh #foodaccess #nhf #nationalhealthfoundation
