National Tube Supply is a market-leading distributor of carbon & alloy mechanical tubing to industrial customers across North America. Founded in 1990 just south of Chicago, NTS has been growing and broadening its reach ever since. NTS maintains more than 450,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space across six North American warehouses: University Park, IL; Hemet, CA; Baytown, TX; Beaver, WV; Millet, AB; and Mississauga, ON. In 2023, NTS acquired Commercial Fluid Power, adding three facilities dedicated to turnkey fluid power solutions in North Canton, OH; Dover, OH; and Rome, GA. With the depth and breadth of its North American inventory, coupled with the global support of the Bianco Group, NTS is uniquely positioned to ensure the right supply, right on time.

What is honing? Honing is the process of running abrasive stones through a bore to provide a final diameter to within thousandths of an inch and a surface finish in the range of 4-250 Ra. The surface finish required is entirely dependent on the customers’ needs, however 16Ra is a very common, fine finish for hydraulic applications. The stones traverse the bore while spinning to produce a crosshatched pattern that allows oil to sit in the microscopic grooves which extends the life of seals that slide along the bore. Like sand paper, the stones come in a variety of grits that help control material removal rate and final surface finish. There are also a handful of different abrasives that can be used including aluminum oxide, cubic boron nitride (cbn), and diamond. Certain abrasives are more effective at honing particular materials due to differences in their machinability. As simple as the process looks, there are a lot of variables when it comes to honing different materials in a wide range of shapes and sizes including the fixturing, tool length, stone grit, stone abrasive, number of tool contact points, tool pressure, feed rates, honing oil application, and finishing techniques.
