In 1775, the Continental Congress authorized Naval ships to defend against British vessels encroaching on the soon-to-be American land. For 250 years, the United States Navy has stood by our nation both as a bulwark of defense and as a symbol of inspiration. Since its inception, the Navy has acted as a connecting body for our allies and a rolling force against our foes. To me, the United States Navy has always been about the courage of action. Rear Admiral Grace Hopper once said, “A ship in port is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.” The Navy was built for movement, especially in times of bleak uncertainty. This can be seen in its heroes, like Captain John Paul Jones, who, when asked to surrender the USS Bonhomme Richard to the HMS Serapis in 1779, courageously responded with “I have not yet begun to fight!” It can be seen again during the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, when Navy Admiral David Farragut famously said, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” The successes of these leaders were not found in fearful immobility, but in their courage of spirit and their spirit of action. To the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963, President John F. Kennedy said, “Any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: ‘I served in the United States Navy.’” As a retired rear admiral, I can attest that the pride and satisfaction of having served in the U.S. Navy is true in any century. To the service members who fill the ranks of the Navy today, I salute you. Always remember our tradition of honor, courage, and commitment to our nation.
