In Avery County, crews have nearly finished building a replacement bridge on Elk River Road after Hurricane Helene destroyed the original structure. Crews poured barrier walls last week and paving will begin this week. While some work will carry over into spring, transportation officials expect to move traffic from the temporary bridge to this permanent structure next month.

"This bridge is important for many reasons." Baxter Healthcare officials recently praised NCDOT, and the greater McDowell County community, for the collaboration it took to open the first Helene-related express design-build bridge.

Before the gates opened for the N.C. State Fair today, our engineer and contractor team were putting the finishing touches on Beryl Road Bridge. The reopening marks a major milestone in the Blue Ridge Road Grade Separation project, improving connectivity and traffic flow in the area.
