In Avery County, crews have nearly finished building a replacement bridge on Elk River Road after Hurricane Helene destroyed the original structure. Crews poured barrier walls last week and paving will begin this week. While some work will carry over into spring, transportation officials expect to move traffic from the temporary bridge to this permanent structure next month.
