Earlier this week, NCDOT Office of Civil Rights and the NC Commission of Indian Affairs hosted another successful Opportunities Tour event, discussing contract opportunities, economic initiatives, and available resources around the Charlotte area. Through our new reentry program, and collaboration with a firm from Charlotte, we have put formerly incarcerated individuals to work doing daily maintenance jobs along roadsides since last fall. Participants have cleaned up roadside litter, worked on traffic control, roadside mowing, and maintenance services. Through our On the Job Training program, we are currently supporting five formally incarcerated individuals and building pathways to employment. Participants were trained in how to operate heavy equipment, direct traffic in work zones and survey property. After successfully completing the academy, each was hired to do transportation construction work. Congratulations to Becca Gallas, honored as Women of the Year by WTS NC Triangle Chapter, part of a global organization dedicated to advancing women in transportation. Since December 2024, Becca has led NCDOT Division 5 as Division Engineer, overseeing transportation infrastructure across seven counties in the Triangle region. Previously, she served as Director of NCDOT Division of Aviation, where she coordinated critical air operations during Hurricane Helene—saving lives and delivering millions of pounds of supplies. Becca is the founding president of WomenConnect, NCDOT’s women-focused employee resource group, where she leads efforts to recruit, support, and retain a diverse and dynamic workforce.
