Trusting in the Power and Potential of People. Since 1869.
About us
At The New York Foundling, we believe that all people—no matter circumstance or zip code—have the opportunity to reach their full potential. But for all of us, discovering what we are capable of and reaching our full potential requires support along the way. We believe and trust in the potential of all people. We work in partnership with more than 30,000 children, adults, and families each year on their own paths to stability, strength, and independence. We believe in the power of personal choice and self-determination. The New York Foundling has deliberately challenged the notion that individuals are limited by their circumstances or are incapable of making the right choice for their future. Rather, our network of programs, services, and opportunities are carefully designed for children, families, and adults to create transformational change in their own lives. We believe and invest in proven practices. With nearly 150 years of experience creating resources, tools, and social capital, we have learned from our community what works. At the same time, we’re not afraid to invest in bold new approaches that comprehensively address challenges and provide the foundation for people to drive their own future.

This week, we celebrated the grand opening of our new Head Start and Early Head Start center in Coamo, Puerto Rico! The Las Flores Center consolidates some of The Founding's existing sites in a new resilient building and houses a state-of-the-art community storm shelter in addition to classrooms and recreational spaces. “The Foundling is deeply committed to delivering high-quality early childhood education services and meeting the evolving needs of the communities we support in Puerto Rico,” said Melanie Hartzog, our President and CEO. We’re proud of this brand-new facility and the opportunities it brings. We would like to give a special thanks to Puerto Rico Secretary of State Rosachely Rivera Santana, District Representative Estrella Martínez, Representative Wanda del Valle, Secretary of the Department of Family Evelyn Matos, and Mayor Juan Carlos García Padilla for partnering with us to support the needs of the community.

Technology changes fast and it can be challenging for parents to help their children navigate the digital world safely. As a parent there are steps you can take to set appropriate limits and keep lines of communication open with your children. The Foundling’s Dr. Akeem Marsh shared his expertise with The Wall Street Journal on this important topic. Thanks to the generous supporters of our back-to-school drive, which raised nearly $80,000 worth of school supplies, The Foundling distributed over 1,500 backpacks and supplies to children as they prepared to return to school. Our events in the Bronx, East Harlem, and Staten Island were a huge success, equipping families with supplies and resources to start the new school year on the right foot. Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible! #backtoschool #buildingfutures #newyorkfoundling

Our Las Flores Head Start & Early Head Start Center is almost ready to begin serving children and families in Coamo, Puerto Rico! This brand-new early education center will allow us to serve more children and families ages 0-5, in a beautiful and bright space designed to inspire learning and growth. Coamo mayor Juan Carlos Garcia Padilla recently toured the space in advance of next month's grand opening - we are thankful for his partnership!
