Joshua Thorvaldson grew up building and taking things apart. Now, the Newport News shipbuilder uses his skills to support the US Navy. Joshua Thorvaldson Electrician 14 years at NNS "I’m a second-generation shipbuilder. My dad and brother both work here, too. As a kid, I grew up taking things apart, like old TVs and radios and building things from nothing. I had the privilege to ride on the New Jersey (SSN 796) sea trials. It was one heck of an experience. To be able to see it being built from the ground up, assisting with troubleshooting, seeing it being finished then riding it, it’s been amazing. My next goal is to become a supervisor. I really like working around people and teaching other shipbuilders."

About us
For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

Newport News shipbuilder Tish McDonald knows all too well the devastating impacts of heart disease. The desire to pay tribute to lost loved ones while giving back to the community drives her passion for the American Heart Association's Hampton Roads Heart Walk. Every year, she helps rally fellow shipbuilders in support of the event, which raises money to save lives. NNS is proud to support the Heart Walk and its mission. Thank you to Tish and all of the other shipbuilders who donate and plan to participate in Heart Walk events next month. Newport News shipbuilders Steve and Eric Hunley are brothers who both work in the test engineering field. Their shipbuilding heritage dates back to their grandfather – a US Navy submariner who ended his career as a shipbuilder – and their father – a retired shipbuilder. October is National Quality Month. Newport News Shipbuilding inspectors like Brianca Graham play critical role in ensuring we deliver quality work. Brianca Graham Inspector Two years at NNS “My fiancé started out as a welder here, and he worked with nondestructive testing. He saw it as a challenge and something he thought I would be good at. I’ll try anything once. He would tell me stories about his days, but hearing about it is totally different from seeing it. We experience a lot of different things quickly. We are a final line of defense before we move these units on.”
