About us
The New York City Employment and Training Coalition is an association of 200 community based organizations, educational institutions, and labor unions that annually provide job training and employment services to over 750,000 New Yorkers, including welfare recipients, unemployed workers, low-wage workers, at-risk youth, the formerly incarcerated, immigrants and the mentally and physically disabled. The Coalition is the only citywide association exclusively focused on workforce development. Started in 1998 as a volunteer organization and incorporated in 2001, NYCETC has continued to grow in numbers and influence. NYCETC’s advocacy, policy and education efforts play a vital role in promoting and strengthening the City’s community-based workforce system, as well as in providing access to the critical information and resources our members need to provide the highest quality direct services . NYCETC’s programs and events provide the City’s workforce community the opportunity to not only share views, but also to reach consensus on policy positions and strategies.

🚨 Our statement in response to today's news of an ATM scam impacting #SYEP NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC) #NYCETC “For nearly 60 years, the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) has been a lifeline for young New Yorkers. It’s often their first job, their first step toward economic independence, and their first encounter with the financial system... the fraud involving SYEP payment cards is deeply disturbing and demands accountability. This wasn’t a failure of the program model, nor of the caring, tireless professionals who make it work. Rather, it was a deliberate exploitation by bad actors, taking advantage of systemic weaknesses in financial safeguards..." Everyone talks about access. But the people shaping the next generation of tech talent? They’re still fighting for it. That realization hit me in 2022. I was worried about the shifting market, the lasting effects of the pandemic, and the rise of AI. So I did what I often do in times of doubt, I called my mentor. I shared my concerns about the job market. She shared hers: how hard it had become to find great, mission-driven educators, and how little support they’re given to stay, grow, and thrive. And that’s when it clicked. The challenge wasn’t the obstacle — it was the unlock. What if we stopped waiting on the system to change and started building a future where teaching is valued, leadership is cultivated, and opportunity is earned by skill, not credentials? That conversation sparked what would become The Marcy Lab School Teaching Pathway, a bet on educators who equip, empower, and show students they belong in this industry. With the support of Reuben Ogbonna II, the grant-writing brilliance of Najette Swain, and the belief of partners who shared this vision, what started as an idea became a movement. Two years later, we’ve placed over a dozen teachers in NYC high schools, reaching thousands of students, opening doors to careers, and rewriting what’s possible. And is it any surprise a program built by educators would go on to produce some of the best? Julian C., Sonobia James, Andrew Enoe, Nicole Juarez-Flores, Ismael Enriquez, Leonardo Cedillo. We bet on educators. But first, a whole lot of people bet on us. Grateful to NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC)) and Google championing this work from the start and to MESA Charter High School, the first hiring partner to take a chance on us. Endless thanks to Comp Sci High & Shilpa Agrawal, mentor, and leader who’s been everything we didn’t know we needed. To Natalie Ferrell and South Bronx Community Charter High School, thank you for believing deeply in this mission and building your own tech pathway alongside us. Finally, gratitude to our thought partners Moses Ojeda, Ana Rader, Alyse Amato, Ana Reyes Martinez who’ve pushed this work forward every step of the way. If you’re hiring Computer Science teachers in NYC, we want to hear from you! DREAM, Unity Preparatory Charter School of Brooklyn, Coney Island Prep, Harlem Village Academies, Prospect Schools, Explore Schools, Williamsburg Charter High School, University Preparatory Academy Charter, Achievement First, Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School, Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter Schools, Ember Charter Schools. Because when students see themselves reflected in their teachers, they don’t just learn how to work in tech, they learn they belong in it. #FutureOfWork #CareerPathways #InvestInEducators #WorkforceDevelopment #TechAccess

New York City’s FY26 budget includes major investments in #EarlyChildhoodEducation, #CUNY, #MentalHealth, and #CulturalInstitutions — many of which directly respond to priorities outlined in a recent Crain's New York Business op-ed by NYCETC CEO Gregory J Morris, MPA and Council Majority Leader Amanda Farías. The op-ed made the case that “workforce development is the foundation of an inclusive economy,” urging the City to embed workforce equity into housing, education, care infrastructure, and public hiring. So—how did the final budget measure up? Below, we break down the wins, the gaps, and what it all means for New Yorkers looking to work, earn, and thrive. As Congress advances the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” NYCETC is sounding the alarm. Earlier this month, we coordinated a sign-on letter urging Congress to reject the bill’s harmful cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, signed by 87 organizations in just 24 hours. Now, in a Newsweek op-ed, CEO Gregory J Morris, MPA expands on what’s at stake for New York’s workers, families, and the organizations that support them. From the elimination of Job Corps to deep cuts to workforce training and health care access, the consequences would be devastating. “Investing in people is not charity. It is how economies grow.” Read the full op-ed: https://lnkd.in/eJdk2r9d #WorkforceDevelopment #Medicaid #SNAP #EconomicMobility #NYCETC #JobTraining #PolicyMatters
