About us

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA comprises six agencies: MTA New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and MTA Construction & Development. The MTA network has the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined. It provides around 2.6 billion trips each year, accounting for about one-third of the nation’s mass transit users and two-thirds of its commuter rail passengers. MTA Bridges and Tunnels, which recorded a record 329 million crossings in 2019, carries more vehicles than any other bridge and tunnel authority in the nation. Updates

  • Yesterday, team members from MTA Bridges and Tunnels and NYC Department of Environmental Protection research scientist Christopher Nadareski checked on and applied ID bands to Skyforger, Genevieve, and Marcella, three peregrine falcon chicks that recently hatched in a purpose-built nest atop the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Banding is part of conservation efforts to protect the peregrine falcon population, which remains on New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s endangered birds list. They are all in good health and should be ready to fly in as few as three weeks!

  • We're celebrating a milestone this weekend—the 75th anniversary of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel! 🎉 Formerly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel when it opened on May 25, 1950, the tunnel runs under the East River and connects Lower Manhattan to Red Hook in Brooklyn. Stretching 1.7 miles long, it is the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in North America.

  • 2025 Music Under New York Auditions are a wrap. Congratulations to the 25 new performers added to the MTA MUSIC roster! 130 applications were received and 47 Finalists auditioned live at Grand Central Madison on May 14. A panel of judges consisting of musicians, music professionals, and transit representatives scored each performance based on the criteria of quality, variety, and appropriateness for the transit environment. MTA MUSIC is one of the handful of programs managed by MTA Arts & Design, responsible for visual and performing art in the transit system. Following an introductory orientation MTA MUSIC talent is eligible to perform at approximately 40 designated locations throughout the MTA network.
