The Power of Looking Ahead to Live Better Today One of the most overlooked tools for success isn’t about chasing the future — it’s about examining the present. Before starting a new project or chasing a dream, I often do what’s called a pre-mortem. Instead of asking “What if it works?”, I ask: “If this fails, what likely caused it?” Most of the time, the answer isn’t mysterious. It’s in the daily habits, the small shortcuts, the things we already know aren’t serving us — but we convince ourselves we’re the exception to the rule. Another practice I lean on is what I call introspective perspective. I imagine my future self looking back at the current version of me. What would he wish I had done differently? What would he thank me for having the courage to do now? This reflection isn’t about regret — it’s about awareness. These self-audits — of health, business, relationships, or personal growth — are not meant to be harsh. They’re meant to give us clarity. They help us identify risks, create contingency plans, and pivot when life inevitably throws obstacles in our path. At the end of the day, I often think about how I want to be described by others. I want to be seen as a leader who develops other leaders. A loving and present father. A devoted and faithful husband. A reliable friend. Someone who actively listens and seeks to understand even opposing perspectives. A pillar in my community for good. A person relentlessly pursuing the best version of themselves. Someone who creates safe spaces where all feel welcome. Known as inclusive and caring. Someone who transcended the landscape of wellness. And, ultimately, a person who made the most of their life. Life has a way of distracting us, pulling us off course. But by pausing to reflect — not just on where we’re going, but on who we’re becoming — we can set ourselves up for real success and happiness. Don’t ignore the truth of today. Use it as your compass for tomorrow.

  • Beyond Sweat: How Oak + Iron Fitness is Redefining Group Fitness in Cary The Old Stigma For years, group fitness has carried a reputation: chase the sweat, keep the variety high, and leave people crawling out the door. It’s the kind of “no pain, no gain” mentality that makes for great marketing but doesn’t always make for great results. Too often, workouts are judged by how exhausted, sweaty, or sore you feel—because human instinct ties effort to value. If it felt harder, it must have been better. That’s why styles that promote intensity have grown so popular—they provide instant proof of effort. You can see and feel the toll of the workout. But here’s the problem: sweat isn’t the same as science. What Cary is Getting with Oak + Iron At Oak + Iron Fitness, we came to Cary with a different vision: to redefine what group fitness means. Our community doesn’t measure progress by puddles of sweat on the floor—we measure it by the strength, resilience, and confidence our members build over time. We’ve removed the chaos and guesswork that often comes with variety-for-variety’s-sake programming. Instead, every class is designed with intention—rooted in exercise science and built around a long-term plan. Our goal isn’t to destroy you today; it’s to set you up to thrive tomorrow, next month, and years from now. Science Meets Community Our programming is built around three things: Longevity: protecting joints, building stability, and supporting recovery so you can train for life, not just for today. Structure: clear, progressive paths that help members see measurable results instead of random sessions that lead nowhere. Community: harnessing human nature itself. We’re wired to thrive in groups, to push harder when surrounded by others, and to stay consistent when we’re held accountable. By combining these elements, we’ve created something unique in Cary: a fitness experience that honors both human instinct and human science. The Future of Group Fitness Gone are the days of judging your workout by how wrecked you feel. At Oak + Iron, progress isn’t about survival—it’s about sustainability. Our classes are structured, intentional, and built to give you momentum for life, not just a moment of sweat. Cary deserves more than just another gym. Cary deserves a community that blends science, structure, and human connection—so that fitness is no longer a battle against willpower, but a natural flow with who we are and how we’re built. This is group fitness, redefined. This is Oak + Iron.

  • Finding Time as a Parent Between work deadlines, kids’ schedules, and the never-ending to-do list, time management can feel impossible. Sleep, workouts, and even small habits often get pushed aside. But here’s the truth: habits don’t form when life is easy — they form when you practice them in the chaos. Even 20 minutes of movement, consistent bedtime routines, or blocking off non-negotiable “me time” can stack up into lasting change. If you’re a busy parent, don’t wait for the “perfect” time. Build the habit in the middle of the mess — that’s where it sticks.

  • What is Oak and Iron Fitness? — and Why It Might Be Exactly What You’ve Been Looking For If you’ve ever tried group fitness and walked away feeling like it was all sweat and no strategy, we get it. Many gyms offer variety and intensity, but little intention or structure behind the workouts. At Oak and Iron Fitness, we do things differently. We’re locally owned, deeply connected to our community, and committed to delivering the kind of fitness experience you simply won’t find in a crowded, big-box gym. Our coaches aren’t just fitness enthusiasts—they’re former college athletes, professional dancers, and even advanced-degree holders in the field, including a doctorate. Every workout we offer is built with purpose: to keep you healthy, safe, injury-free, and consistently progressing toward your goals. Here’s what sets us apart: Structured, intentional programming - Three days a week are dedicated purely to strength training in our LIFT classes. The other days bring a mix of metabolic conditioning sessions that vary in intensity: STEADY – Low-intensity steady state training focused on endurance, core strength, and mobility. KB STEADY – A variation that incorporates kettlebell flows and skill work so you can learn to move and train with precision. DRIVE – High-intensity interval training inspired by athletic performance, built for high energy and output. Small group fitness & private personal training - Our group classes cap at 16 people, ensuring you get the attention you need. But if you want a completely customized plan and 1-on-1 focus, our personal training programs are designed to accelerate your progress. You’ll work with a dedicated coach in a smaller, distraction-free setting where your goals are the only priority. Time-efficient for busy lives - Perfect for professionals, parents, and anyone who wants to remove the guesswork and maximize their time in the gym. Inclusive and adaptable - Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or brand new to fitness, our trainers tailor the workout to meet you where you are. Accountability and community - We track your progress through periodic testing and keep you motivated with a supportive, like-minded group. After four years of being voted Top Gym in Wake County at our North Raleigh location, we just opened our second studio in August at Waverly Place—and we can’t wait to meet everyone in the neighborhood. At Oak and Iron, you’re more than a number—we understand the challenges of balancing work, family, and self-care, and we’re here to help you make it work. Whether you’ve been skeptical about group fitness, you’re looking for highly effective personal training, or you’re simply ready for something better, come see the difference. Your first class is free—send us a message today.

My first job post-grad is nothing like I expected. Why North Carolina? What made you choose Raleigh? What, did you just throw a dart on the board? You didn’t know a single person? So, you just went for it? While I still don’t have an answer for why I specifically chose this place, I’ve never once questioned whether it was the right move. Post-grad can be challenging for most, especially when you think you’re supposed to have a perfectly laid-out plan. In my case, all I had was a gut feeling. No, I didn’t know a single person. No, I’ve never lived in North Carolina, or on my own. No, I don’t know what this is going to lead to. Isn’t that the point though? Not knowing what is going to happen if you take that job. Not knowing what will happen if you move to that city. If you spend your life listing all of the things you don’t know, you’ll never take that leap of faith. The regret of missed opportunities will always trump the regret of trying and falling short. To further explain my decision, during a Mel Robbins' podcast episode, "A Process for Finding Purpose," Mel asks Jay Shetty what the difference between Passion and Purpose is: Passion is what brings you life.  Purpose is using your passion to make a difference in someone's life. And if your passion doesn’t have that service aspect, then it's not a purpose. Growing up as a competitive tennis player, I was staying in shape to serve myself. Sure I loved to workout because it made ME feel better, made ME a better person, and helped ME through hard times. But Oak and Iron Fitness has truly taught me the importance of community. One of their core values is "Connection" because this industry is truly about building relationships. It's not just about programming workouts to fit the clients needs, but constantly brainstorming ways to brighten their days, improve their confidence, and make them feel seen and heard. Learning how to use my passion to serve others has been the greatest experiences of my life and I am excited to continue on this journey! Tip of the day: If you aren’t sure about your next step in life, like every single one of us, just go with your gut. You don’t need some well-thought out plan or long explanation to back it up. All you need is passion and purpose.
