Our mission is to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world.
About us
At the Obama Foundation, we are guided by a core belief: that ordinary people working together can change history. Our mission is to inspire those people to take action, empower them to change their world for the better, and connect them so they can achieve more together than they can alone. We were founded by community organizers, so when we seek change, we do it by bringing people together. That approach begins at home, on the South Side of Chicago, where we are building the Obama Presidential Center. The Center represents a historic opportunity for Chicago: a chance to build a world-class museum and public gathering space that celebrates our nation’s first African American President and First Lady, steps away from where he began his career, where she was raised, and where—together—they made their home. But that approach extends to all our work, whether it’s holding leadership training sessions in communities throughout the U.S., bringing local leaders together in countries around the world, working to support the global education of girls, or ensuring young men of color have pathways to opportunity. As President Obama has said, “we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together.” So join us.

The artist behind some of America’s most iconic and evocative public spaces is realizing a new vision in Chicago. Get a sneak peek at Maya Lin’s sculpture for the Ann Dunham Water Terrace, honoring President Obama’s late mother. As the President says of this space: “I could picture [my mom] sitting on one of the benches on a nice summer afternoon and just smiling watching a bunch of kids running through a fountain.”

To Sonia Garcia, food is more than fuel – it’s connection and culture. As the Manager of Benefits Outreach at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, she is helping people across the city access healthy and reliable meals. “People share love languages through providing people with food,” Sonia says. “Coming home and Grandma’s making dinner, making your favorite cookies … little things like that bring people hope and lift up spirits.” That belief guides her work. Through outreach, benefit enrollment, and community coordination, Sonia is helping more Illinoisans access nutritious food and the dignity that comes with it. This #WorldFoodDay, see how Sonia is making a difference at the Greater Chicago Food Depository: https://lnkd.in/gnwCq-3C

When someone completes one of our programs at the Obama Foundation — whether it’s the Obama Scholars, Obama-Chesky Voyagers, or Obama Leaders — they are then welcomed into the Obama Leaders Network which is our forever family. Long after their program ends, the Network allows our program participants endless opportunities to continue connecting with us and other changemakers. One of those inspiring leaders is Christian Vanizette from France. At chilli, Christian is focused on combatting climate change by empowering individuals to become effective climate activists. We caught up with him at the Obama Leadership Network’s Climate Convening in July to hear how he’s continued to grow and give back through the OLN. Check out his story:

“Authoritarianism is rising across the globe — and no one is being spared,” President Obama warned in a recent conversation with three #ObamaLeaders from Poland and Hungary. The discussion brought together Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz, Sandor Lederer, and Stefania Kapronczay, who are on the frontlines of defending democracy by fighting corruption and empowering citizens.
