Today, we bid farewell to DRC's superintendent, Jen Sanders, after 32 years of service. Jen has established herself as an innovator and is sought after nationwide for her expertise. Thanks to her, the people in our care have the opportunity to learn in 21st-century classrooms, utilizing tools like Google Classroom, and have access to college-level courses at every prison. "The Ohio correctional education system is the best in the country, and that's because of Jen Sanders and her leadership," said DRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith. "She has a unique combination of experience and passion that sets her apart from others. Jen has served in educational settings, as well as in a deputy warden role responsible for custody and unit management. Regardless of her position, she has consistently mentored those around her, and because of this, our school system will continue to thrive after she retires. Jen believes, as I do, that education is a necessity for those we serve rather than a privilege. I'm honored to call her my friend, and I – like so many others here at DRC - will greatly miss working alongside her." https://lnkd.in/ddqr6izQ

This week's #StaffSpotlight is Captain Jerald Raypole, the administrative captain at Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution. Capt. Raypole is described as a true "student of the game", always going above and beyond to be the best he can be for those around him and learning new things every day. He is quick to help anyone who needs it, and he has become the "go-to guy" for correction officers all the way up to executive staff members. Thank you for your hard work, captain!

ODRC is the first agency in the country to train incarcerated individuals to facilitate the Decision Points program, a cognitive-behavioral program that helps people change the way they think. This initiative enables trained facilitators to work alongside staff to enhance cognitive behavioral programming from the outset of incarceration. So far, 36 incarcerated men have completed the training, and we look forward to having women from our female institutions complete theirs in October. Excellent work by our staff trainers as well, who are making this possible.
