  • Fireflies are fascinating and no one knows that better than the OKC Zoo’s own Conservation Scientist, Dr. Emily Geest! She recently teamed up with TED-Ed to create a video exploring the world of fireflies. From stealthy femme fatales to intricate light-based communication, these glowing insects lead remarkable lives. The Zoo supports firefly conservation through summer surveys and light pollution studies. You can help protect fireflies by turning off outdoor lights when you don’t need them and leaving leaf litter in your yard to create habitat for them. • The OKC Zoo is thrilled to welcome Jalyn Todd as our new Animal Caretaker of Primates! Jalyn’s journey with the Zoo began through our intern program, and we’re excited to see him return - this time as a full-time member of the Animal Care team. His dedication to animal welfare and passion for primate care make him a perfect fit for the role. When he’s not caring for the Zoo’s incredible primates, you might even catch him listening to J. Cole. We’re proud to have Jalyn back on board as we continue our mission to connect people with wildlife and wild places.

  • Butterflies with Bluetooth??🦋🛜 That's right! The Oklahoma City Zoo is partnering with The Xerces Society to monitor the annual monarch butterfly migration with new, state-of-the-art radiotelemetry transmitter tags. This past Saturday, Oct. 4, as part of the Zoo's Native Species Day celebration, six monarch butterflies were equipped with these new transmitters. Designated XOKC001 through XOKC006, each butterfly was also given a flower-inspired nickname: Violet, Maximillian, Autumn Sage, Juniper, Bluemist, and Beebalm. The tags are ultra-light, solar-powered, and equipped with Bluetooth so anyone with a phone can follow the butterflies' journey and help contribute to the data collection! To join in on the flight-tracking fun, download the Project Monarch Science app for Apple and Android. Read more at: https://bit.ly/3KZQD3q 📷: Dr. Jennifer D.

  • The Oklahoma City Zoo is incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall, the famed anthropologist and conservationist. So much of what we know about chimpanzees came from her pioneering work. Over the years, Dr. Goodall visited the OKC Zoo on several occasions to share her work, her ideas, and her inspiration with our team members, volunteers, and the community. Her dedication to conserving wildlife and wild places continues to impact us all. 💚 #ThankYouJane #RememberingJane 📷: Photo Crew member, Andrea J.
