🐠 The sufficient number of ratifications has been reached for the #BBNJ Agreement on #ocean #biodiversity in the #HighSeas and deep #SeaBed to enter into force in early 2026 🦈 🐙 This is a great achievement for advancing international cooperation on #ocean-#climate #science + #action to protect #HumanRights, in accordance with the human right to a healthy environment 🐚 Astrid Puentes Riaño 🐳 The BBNJ Agreement has so much potential for #TransformativeChange, as I have explored in several academic publications (listed below in case of interest): “#Equity, #Sustainability and #Transformation in the BBNJ Agreement” in F. Relatora Especial de la ONU para el derecho humano al ambiente sano, limpio y sostenible | UN Special Rapporteur for the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment
Jointly with Elisa Morgera, UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change and Human Rights, we hail the ratification of the BBNJ, a landmark ocean protection agreement. 👏🏽 What a great day to welcome a historic milestone: the ratification of the Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), which will enter into force in January 2026. Today, World Maritime Day, which theme is “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, gives us the chance to reflect on the importance of multilateralism to reach the protection of the ocean, and ensuring a human rights-based approach to ocean conservation. The #BBNJ (or High Seas Treaty) is a landmark for the protection of the high seas and the deep seabed. We praise the inclusion of the precautionary principle, the recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ rights and the requirement to all planned activities in areas beyond national jurisdiction to undergo environmental impact assessments to identify and prevent potential risks to marine life. Another thing to celebrate is the entry force of the World Trade Organization Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, an important step in global ocean governance. By halting harmful subsidies, this agreement becomes a powerful tool for protecting fisheries. 🔗 Press release: https://lnkd.in/gKrvRHtJ 🌊 Marine life and a safe climate are essential to our right to a healthy environment. #HighSeasTreaty #FisheriesSubsidies #WTO #BBNJ #AltaMar Gina Romero High Seas Alliance Deep Sea Conservation Coalition UN Ocean Decade Peter Thomson
