Bringing people together to write code, save lives.

About us

OpenMRS is an open source Medical Records System designed for low-resource settings, supported and implemented by a global community of healthcare professionals, informaticists, and engineers. Our software is used as part of the national public health system in over 80 countries by Ministries of Health and their partners for over 22 million patients in the world’s most difficult healthcare environments. OpenMRS is used in caring for the world’s most vulnerable populations, such as people living with stigmatized infectious diseases, and others in poverty. Our software is free to use and protects health systems from vendor lock-in. Thousands of studies have been conducted using OpenMRS, with notable research impact to multiple disease fields such as Maternal Health, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, Ebola, and more: https://om.rs/evidence. What makes a digital health system truly effective? 🌍💻 As we prepare for this year’s Global Digital Health Forum, we’ve been thinking about lessons from our work with clinics, supply chains, and national programs worldwide. For SolDevelo, digital health isn’t just another sector. It’s a place where technology directly affects people’s well-being, their access to care, and their trust in public systems. ❤️⚕️ Working with global health partners over the years has shown us just how much reliable, thoughtful digital infrastructure can change daily life in clinics, supply chains, and national programs. Our work with projects like OpenLMIS, openIMIS, and OpenMRS is built on the belief that 💡 public health systems deserve tools that are practical, resilient, and designed with the realities of low-resource settings in mind. 💡 Every country teaches us something new. We’ve seen how: 🔹 fragmented data can hold back decisions at critical moments, 🔹 supply chains struggle without visibility across the last mile, 🔹 connectivity gaps make everyday digital workflows harder, 🔹 interoperability issues slow coordination across ministries and partners, 🔹 and long-term maintenance is essential to keep systems delivering value. In our work supporting OpenLMIS deployments in Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique, strengthening openIMIS for health financing and social protection, or helping clinicians use OpenMRS in challenging environments, the focus is always the same: build systems that actually work every day, not just on launch day. 🛡️ That means listening to users’ voices, learning their actual needs, reinforcing quality and performance, supporting ongoing maintenance, and contributing to open-source communities that push everyone forward. Many of these improvements are invisible - faster performance, clearer workflows, smoother integrations - but they make a real difference for the people relying on these tools to deliver care. 🩺 Heading into this year’s GDHF, we’re reminded that strengthening digital health systems means hard work and great dedication - and yet the world is full of people committed to making healthcare more accessible. It’s truly inspiring to be a part of this journey. 🫶 If you’ll be at #GDHF2025, we’d love to connect. Let’s explore how we can improve digital health systems together - from national strategy to implementation and long-term sustainability. #digitalhealth #opensource #supplychains #AllinHealth

  • OpenMRS was proud to take part in the first-ever OHDSI Africa Symposium, held at the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) in Kampala, Uganda. This was a historic moment for the African OHDSI community as we continue to expand collaboration, research capacity, and data-driven innovation across the continent. OpenMRS was represented by Jayasanka Weerasinghe and Namanya Abert, who joined researchers, implementers, and technical leaders for three days of training and collaboration. During the symposium, we presented ongoing work to support observational research by building an ETL pipeline that maps OpenMRS data to the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM). This effort aims to make health data captured through OpenMRS more accessible to researchers and to enable participation in global OHDSI tools and analytics. We extend our thanks to THE JOINT CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTRE (JCRC) OFFICIAL and the OHDSI community for hosting this important event, and OpenMRS look forward to continued collaboration in strengthening data-driven healthcare across Africa. #OpenMRS #ohdsi #GlobalGoods #opensource #Interoperability #OMOP #GlobalHealth

Collaboration isn't a buzzword. It's creating real changes in digital health. This time last year, we launched the first Community Health Toolkit squad. It was an innovative approach, inspired by peers like OpenMRS and DHIS2, bringing together global experts united by the same ambition into small, cross-functional, and focused teams. Since then, squads have been tackling everything from reducing the hosting total cost of ownership to revamping documentation, all with a vision of optimizing the CHT and making it easier for frontline health workers to deliver quality doorstep care. In our latest blog, Philip Mwago from Medic, Bernard Kagondu at ssollinc, and Y-NOTE's Maxime NGOE share successes from two recent community squads, and what it means for interoperability and security for the CHT. At the end of September, we launched the pilot cohort of the Birdaro training program, welcoming 60 individuals from 24 different open-source projects into the largest online training program CSCCE has ever run! We were delighted to receive more than 50 applications from a wide range of scientific open-source projects, and were able to put together a diverse cohort of participants from different organizations at various stages of growth and development. Because of this diversity, we’re not just delivering training - we’re also nucleating a community of practitioners who can share knowledge, tools, and strategies. In a new blog post on the CSCCE website, we’re highlighting the individuals and projects who are taking part in the current cohort of the Birdaro training program: https://lnkd.in/gTX_uC4e And over the next few days, we’ll share more about this inaugural cohort of the Birdaro training program here on LinkedIn! The pilot module was designed based on the needs and interests of the participating projects, and focuses on governance and documentation. If you are interested in the further development of the program to encompass topics in community engagement, project management, and more, please reach out to info@birdaro.org

  • Wrapping up the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) Summit 2025 – Munich, Germany 🇩🇪 Over the past three days, our OpenMRS team including Bawantha Rathnayaka, Beryl Kanali and Jayasanka Weerasinghe had an incredible experience connecting with some of the top 200 open source organizations from around the world at the Google Summer of Code Summit 2025. We shared what has worked well for us, learned from other organizations, and had meaningful conversations about the common challenges of managing and growing open source communities. It was truly inspiring to see how passionate contributors and mentors across the world are building technology that makes a difference. Over the years, we’ve learned that joining a new open-source community can feel a bit scary at first; especially for students who are just starting out. 💛 At OpenMRS, we believe in making every contributor feel welcomed, supported, and confident to take their first step. That’s why our GSoC team created the OpenMRS GSoC Video Podcast Series to help applicants get to know our projects, mentors, and the friendly faces behind them. Hearing that this year’s accepted contributors for OpenMRS used this series to feel at home and find the right fit made us really happy.

TIL > OpenMRS created a video podcast series to help Google Summer of Code contributors understand their project and learn about their Mentors during the application process. Talking with them today, they said that most of the accepted contributors used this series to help them feel like the project was the right place for them ⭐️💛 #OpenSource https://lnkd.in/efwF_FMu
