Excellent Education. Powerful Families. Strong Communities.

About us

Founded on Skid Row in 1980, our model fosters pathways to success through powerful families, strong communities, and excellence in education for children and youth to thrive. Our unique approach is effective because of the aspects working together: Excellent Education: Our schools and youth centers offer high-quality education and wraparound support to educate the whole child from 6-weeks to 24 years-of-age. Using an inquiry-based approach with social-emotional integration we nurture a child’s healthy academic, physical, and social-emotional development to succeed in school, work, and life. Powerful Families: We partner with parents and provide opportunities to strengthen their leadership, provide support in stress management and education, plus counseling and clinical support, to ensure students and families thrive. Strong Communities: We are active in our communities to create spaces that connect children, youth, and families to education and resources to lead and succeed. We have strategic partnerships with agencies and community stakeholders across LA to build trust and together give voice to our diverse perspectives.

Our third Impact Report spotlight highlights the launch of Poquita's Garden, Heluna Health's first children's book. Co-authored and illustrated by award-winning artist Lalo Alcaraz, Poquita’s Garden addresses critical public health challenges, including food insecurity and gaps in early childhood literacy. Just as the book's main character Amaya’s garden flourishes through care and collaboration, Poquita's Garden has grown beyond its pages, bringing families together around food, learning, and well-being. This past year, with support from Gallagher, Heluna Health printed and distributed 10,000 copies of Poquita’s Garden to children and families across Los Angeles. Books were shared with our community through PHFE WIC and its Little by Little School Readiness Program, along with a series of launch events in collaboration with Para Los Niños, Eastern Los Angeles Family Resource Center, Estrada Courts, and Linc Housing's Fairview Heights community. Through these events, the book became a catalyst for connection through story times, hands-on activities with Growing Hope Gardens, and conversations about healthy habits. By planting seeds with this book, Heluna Health is helping grow stronger, healthier communities, one story at a time. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about building what Dr. King called the “Beloved Community," through collective action and cooperation to create real, lasting change. Last week, our team joined LA Works and more than 3,000 Angelenos for Southern California’s largest MLK Day of Service. This year’s focus on healing, resilience and justice felt especially timely as many Angelenos recovering from last year’s wildfires and face ongoing barriers  and uncertainty. Dr. King’s belief in the transformative power of community service lives on through organizations like new TBF grantee L.A. Works, which creates more ways for Angelenos to get involved.. A dozen TBF team members and their family members rolled up their sleeves to assemble meal kits, build 500 felt storyboard kits and more in support of HOPICS, Para Los Niños and the Pasadena Educational Foundation. That’s the power of service: It meets the moment and it strengthens the community for what comes next. Let’s keep showing up — not just on MLK Day, but all year long — and do our part to build the Beloved Community together.

We’re excited to share that New Teacher Center will attend the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition Annual Convening next week. NTC has a long-standing commitment to supporting charter networks in navigating unique instructional challenges, as evidenced by our recent partnership with Para Los Niños (PLN), a charter network in Los Angeles. In collaboration with PLN leadership, NTC helped develop a comprehensive, multi-year strategic plan to improve outcomes for their multilingual learner population: ✔️ NTC facilitated the creation of an instructional vision that moved beyond simple translation to "translanguaging," leveraging students' home languages as a bridge for deeper learning. ✔️We developed a specialized “Dynamic Student Oracy Walkthrough” tool to help administrators and coaches capture specific data on oral language development in the classroom. Charter leaders like those at PLN have described the NTC experience as "tailored, knowledgeable, and skilled." If you are attending the convening, be sure to connect with NTC’s VP of Program Delivery & Partnerships, Ann Wenzel, to discuss how NTC can partner with your network to build educator capacity and drive instructional coherence. We look forward to seeing you at #DCSC2026! Read the full Para Los Niños case study: https://ow.ly/14QL50Y59Gh #NTC #MultilingualLearners

  • We've partnered with UCLA Vision to bring comprehensive vision care to our students – including free screenings, eye exams, and eyeglasses when needed. The impact? INCREDIBLE. 162 students have already received on-site vision screenings! When students can see clearly, they learn confidently and thrive academically. UCLA Vision has visited our Elementary School three times so far, and they're returning soon to complete screenings for TK–2nd grade students and anyone who missed earlier visits. #Partnerships

  • Thank you for your leadership, Sandra! We are lucky to have such an engaged and energized board of directors ❤️

Yesterday, Para Los Niños held its annual Staff Recognition Dinner, where I was deeply honored to be recognized as one of PLN’s 45 Champions. It has been a true privilege to serve on the board for over six years and as Vice Chair this past year. Thank you to the incredible PLN team for the truly meaningful work you do every day in our community. In a world that can feel heavy and scary, PLN remains a powerful source of joy, love, and hope for children, their families, and for me. ❤️💚💛💙
