"What led you to leave/consider leaving)?" This is one of the most common and most delicate questions in a Japanese interview. Your interviewer isn’t digging for gossip or trying to catch you off guard. They want to understand your situation and what led you to believe your current company isn’t a long-term fit. Why? Because Japanese companies place a high value on stability and institutional knowledge. They’re usually looking for employees who will stay and grow with the organization. They need to know what motivates you, what you value in a workplace, and how you handle dissatisfaction or change. Similar questions you might hear: – なぜ前の会社を退職されたのですか? (Why did you leave your previous company?) – どのような理由で転職を考え始めましたか? (What made you start thinking about changing jobs?) – 現在の仕事に不満な点はありますか? (Is there anything you’re dissatisfied with in your current role?) Appropriate responses: Keep it professional and forward-looking. Avoid blaming others or focusing on negatives. Talk about your goals, not your frustrations. If you were laid off due to a downturn or restructuring, that’s also a perfectly valid reason. ✅ 前職ではスキルアップの機会が限られていたため、より成長できる環境を求めています。 (In my previous role, growth opportunities were limited, so I’m seeking an environment where I can continue developing my skills.) ✅ 新しい分野にも挑戦したいと思い、転職を考えました。 (I wanted to take on new challenges in a different field, which led me to consider changing jobs.) ✅ これまでの経験を活かして、より幅広い業務に携わりたいと考えています。 (I’d like to build on my experience and take part in a wider range of work.)
