How do birds fly so far, so efficiently? A new study from Lund University reveals that migratory songbirds optimize their flight speed for peak energy efficiency — and stable isotope analysis was key to unlocking this insight. Using Picarro’s G2201-i Isotope Analyzer, researchers measured metabolic power in thrush nightingales flying in a wind tunnel. The result? A surprising peak in energy conversion efficiency at 7–8 m/s — the exact speeds birds use during long-distance migration. This discovery challenges decades-old flight models and shows how Picarro technology is helping scientists rethink the physics of flight.
